Well, the Fourth of July has come and gone. As we shoot off or watch those fireworks, we are reminded of the men and women who have used real gun fire in war after war for us, our country and all that we stand for. We definitely enjoy our family time with picnics, the lake, rodeos and more; however, we must always remember to thank those who have given us those times through their service and sacrifice. The next big event going on in our area is the ever popular Oregon Trail Days. Gering will...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far! Here is hoping that the summer is treating you well. We sure have had some beautiful weather. I haven’t seen any combines around yet but it shouldn’t be too long before they are busy everywhere. We have had family visiting for the past two weeks and extra grand kids here in between. We had a couple of days of so-called “ normal” between the two sets, and now with all headed home it seems pretty quiet as we try to get back to our regular schedul...

Hello Banner County! Here is hoping you all are doing well and that your summer has been a good one so far. After the huge hail storm last July I was pretty disgusted by the time we finally had the roof replaced and the house re-painted so I let all of the yard work damage sit all winter long. I am almost finished with replacing all of those plants and trees. I still have quite a lot to do and I am still finding glass and other broken pieces where they should not be. Hopefully we will not have...

Good Morning Banner County! Wow has it ever been hot around these parts. We had a real downpour Sunday evening and you would think that with all of the rain that we have had that it was not needed, but from what I hear folks say, we needed it. My yard sure appreciated it! Glad that all happened on Sunday and not the day before as that was Historical Day. Many patrons and visitors seemed to be enjoying themselves, which is exactly what the goal for the day is. The entertainment at the museum was...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors near and far. Big news here this week is the upcoming annual Historical Day, this Saturday, June 11. The fun begins at 7 a.m. with breakfast, followed by a fun run, bbq cook-off, parade, games, lunch at the school provided by our local FFA students, the museum sights and entertainment by a group of three ladies who call themselves “Yes, Ma’am.” These gals perform a series of songs that are reminiscent of the USO shows during WWII. The day will wind down...

Good morning! It’s beautiful here in Harrisburg this morning and so far no rain. Everything is just blue sky meeting green. This past Memorial Day weekend could not have been any nicer and it was wonderful to see the several cemeteries we visited looking so nice. I read in the news about three or four types of vandalism across the country to either memorials or in cemeteries and it makes a person want to thrash someone. Respect for our fallen servicemen and women is the very least we can do. L...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far! It is a beautiful morning here in Harrisburg and the wind is still blowing. That keeps me from working outside and is not pleasant no matter what one is trying to do. It blew so hard that this past weekend was a loss so we went to the movies. Have you seen the movie “Eddie the Eagle”? The kids and I went to see it. Very inspirational and based on a true story. It involved a young man with lots of determination who overcame the odds wit his hea...

Good morning! Is there anyone out there in newspaper land besides me that wonders each morning what kind of weather mother nature will send us for that particular day? What season will she pick? It is green and beautiful around here, but cold and with frost on occasion. The poor trees have leafed out and been snowed on more than once already and the flowers are shivering in their pots. And the grass needs mowed again. If the rain will let up and the sun will dry the yard out. On Monday, the...

Good morning Banner County! We woke up after a nice Mother’s Day weekend to more cloudy skies and puddles in the yard. I would think the farmers are getting somewhat tired of all of this moisture. Save a little of it for July please. I did get some mowing done last week, but not all of it. A lot of graduations are taking place this weekend, so maybe once those are over it will dry up. Always has to rain then so the roads can be a mess and field trips can be a challenge! The elementary students e...

Good morning to all here in Harrisburg and Banner County, friends near and far! So here it is May and the question of the day is how much snow did you get last Saturday? We had at least six inches of the heavy, sloppy stuff. Visibility was not good and more than one vehicle was off of the road and into the ditch. I am still waiting to see if any permanent damage has been done to my young trees and some flowers. The lilacs have a hard time when this happens. So now it is supposed to start...

Hello Banner County, friends near and far. Here we are enjoying the last week of our April 2016 and it has been raining almost every day. That is fine with me and probably most of you farmers out there, unless it is getting too wet. I am still working on flowers and grass, but that is a work in progress that will most likely never be completed. We can’t have too many flowers, can we? Our sympathy goes out to the family of Martha Bonds who passed away early last week, especially to Marvin and B...

Good morning! A fine December morning it is here at my house. Mother Nature knows very well that it is April, but she chooses to throw a temper tantrum if she wants to, to the tune of at least five inches here over the weekend. Boy am I glad that I did not set out those new plants that are sitting on my kitchen counter. I mowed the front yard just a day or two before the snow hit and that was good enough for now, surely it will warm up to stay before long. The 2016 Prom for our kids is this...

Good morning to the folks here in Banner County, friends near and far. Last week I was having a really weird thing going on with my computer. Still is as far as that goes, but in another program. I did not have this one last week. I literally sent my news last week in bits, (very small bits) to the editor. Thankfully, they were able to piece it together and make sense out of it. Gremlins. My printer has a case of them also. Some days are just like that. It is so good to see everything around...

Good morning Banner County! Hope yours is going well. I am having computer issues so will try to make this short and sweet. Short anyway. Wasn’t the weather last week something else? May one day and December the next. I found myself stuck but good one day, and thanks to Jeramiah S. and his tractor, I was plowed out to pavement. In last week’s news, I commented that April Fool’s Day had come and gone..well April Fools! This week it really has. The Banner County School board will hold its regul...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. I hope you had a wonderful Easter and are handling this crazy weather we have been dealing with. Last week I made mention of my Christmas cactus.....well I do not have a Christmas cactus. It is a poinsettia. Shows you how I am doing! However, my two year old poinsettia is blooming and I just love it. We now have a break from the holidays until July with a few smaller ones in between. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy most of them, they just come too f...

Good morning everyone! Spring has sprung and snow flakes are still falling every so often. Enough already! How about some rain showers? However the fields are starting to green up and it is starting to look a bit better. I can’t believe that April is just around the corner. I am still trying to adjust to the time change. How about you? This Sunday is Easter Sunday, my personal favorite holiday. I hope everyone will be enjoying this special time with friends and family. The students and school s...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. I hope you are all doing well, especially with this daylight savings time business. I never do adjust well. The Lady Wildcats hosted a Talent Show this past Friday to raise money for summer camps and I didn’t see many of you there. Ten acts entertained us and most of them were unique. Congratulations to Avery Wicker and Riley Little on winning first place and to all contestants, you are all winners. The third quarter of school is winding down a...

Good morning to each of you and here is hoping that the world is treating you well! Last week was the first of March and it started out acting like a lamb, but by the end of the day we had snow, so your guess is as good as mine on how we will bring April in. Personally I am ready for Spring. Remember to spring forward this coming Sunday as it is once again time for the time change. I really do not look forward to loosing any sleep and it takes me about two weeks to adjust. The elementary student...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. It has been just a few days ago that February was here and now we are into March, like a lamb none the less. We have had some truly beautiful weather this past month. I recently spent the weekend with my daughter and three grands in Denver and Fort Collins. It was shorts and sandals weather as we visited the Museum of Nature and Science. And the whole world had the same idea as us. The parking garage was full and so many people were in there...

Good morning Banner County! After a week of horrible strong winds, this one has been quite a lot nicer. I know many of you who had property damage due to the wind last week and we had our share so now we have those messes to clean up. Did you see the pictures from out at the Scotts Bluff National Monument of the cattle pulling the covered wagon? Mother Nature doing some ‘cow tipping!’ Seriously though, I hope there was no serious damage. For real cattle, this past Saturday was beef weigh-in tim...

Good morning Banner County! Here is hoping that all is well with all of you. We only had three days of school this week, so our boy had some serious cleaning to do. His room is, or was, scary to walk around in if you were barefoot. So this is at least a part of what is going on around here. Beginning today February 18 and going on through February 20 is state high school wrestling. I believe that we have qualified wrestlers, but am not positive. Also, high school girls basketball sub-district...

Well. Last week was a week of snow, cancellations, and re-scheduling. I am pretty sure that I do not know about all of them either, so I will attempt to get you caught up to what’s going on for this week. Today, Thursday, February 11, the junior high MAC basketball tournament will begin in Leyton with the boys playing in Gurley at 12:30 p.m. and the girls playing in Dalton at 3 p.m. Friday the senior high girls will play here at home verses the Potter-Dix Coyotes (almost said Panthers!). The g...

Good morning, or evening, whatever the case may be. I am hoping that all is going well with you. I have hit sort of a bump in the road here the past few days and all I want to do is sleep. Winter hibernation! This coming week-end is the date for the Farm Expo beginning with breakfast tomorrow morning Friday, February 5 at the Mitchell Fairgrounds. Events continue through Saturday. Then Saturday evening, the annual Bandana Benefit Ball will begin at 5:30 p.m. with social hour and the dinner bell...

Good morning! I hope everyone is doing well, we are all certainly warmer and shoveling less snow than those folks east of us. Weather back there has been horrible, one more reason to be thankful here in the mid-west. I can hardly believe that January is all but over and we are heading into February. We send our sympathy to the Person family on their recent loss of Charles. He was a life long resident of Banner Count. The Harrisburg Community Church will hold their annual board meeting on...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors near and far. I hope this week is treating you well. I am sure there is a lot going on in the personal lives of the folks here in our community and their extended families, however, as far as community events go there are very few this time of the year. Most of us enjoy staying home and close to the fire anyway! We do have some exciting news though with the arrival of two babies last week, and no not twins. Congratulations to grandma and grandpa Cashler on...
