Heritage Society to recognize local author
Wednesday, June 17 2009 Jeannie Hockersmith
The public is invited to join the Pine Bluffs Heritage Society in recognizing Loretta Jewell, lifetime resident and author from Carpenter. Jewell will be presented with a certificate of recognition reading: "Members of the Pine Bluffs Heritage Society wish to recognize your long-standing contributions in preserving the history of eastern Laramie County. We commend you for your extensive research and writing about the people and events that shaped our communities. Because of your effort, it is possible to preserve our past for future generations to enjoy."
The evening begins with a carry-in dinner at 6 p.m., this evening and then at 7 p.m., the certificate will be presented to Jewell, who will speak about her current projects along with a display of her books and memorabilia.
Jewell (Noyer) was raised on a farm southeast of Carpenter and graduated from Carpenter High School in 1954. She married Glen Jewell on May 29, 1955. Jewell has two sons, Roger and Steve Jewell. Her journalism career began when she joined the high school newspaper staff in the early 1950’s. Jewell was given an assignment to write about the families that rode on her bus. Those early writing experiences led to a lifetime career and the publishing of several books, "Homestead the Prairie," (1968), "Memories of Carpenter High School," (1974) and three editions of "The Blizzard in Black and White," (2002-2008). For 50 years, she wrote the Carpenter News column for the Pine Bluffs Post. Jewell also worked for Carpenter Elementary School for 10 years as a library and cafeteria aide. She currently maintains the Carpenter High School Alumni newsletter.
