High school rodeo-ers ready for state

With the Wyoming High School Rodeo Championships just around the corner, local high school cowboys and cowgirls wrapped up their regular season with the Gillette rodeo, June 5-7 and the Douglas rodeo, June 12-14.

In the Gillette rodeo, Pine Bluffs Chance Madsen took second both Saturday and Sunday in the bareback riding with scores of 59 and 61 respectively. In the team roping, Dalton Harris of Lyman and Trever McNamee of Burns finished Saturday in sixth at 10.34 seconds and finished ninth on Sunday with a time of 16.22. Albin’s Tim Malm took ninth in the calf roping on Saturday with a time of 12.56. Malm made a better showing for himself on Sunday taking second in the event with a time of 10.63.

In the Douglas rodeo (June 12-14), Madsen again took second on both days with scores of 63 and 65. Malm won Saturday’s calf-roping event with a time of 9.6 seconds. Malm teamed up with Cord Johnson of Gillette in the team roping to take third on Saturday and sixth on Sunday.

Also participating in the Douglas rodeo was Lainie Cathcart placing eleventh in the barrels and competing in the breakaway roping. Bethany Malm competed in the barrels on Sunday. Austin Humphrey competed in the bareback and bull riding and the team of McNamee and Harris placed tenth in the team roping at 15.15 seconds.

On the year, Malm is currently the state leader in calf-roping with 113 points and Madsen holds the number three spot in bareback riding with 165 points.

Up next is the Wyoming High School Rodeo state championships in Douglas. The contest begins June 25 with a Cowboy Prom scheduled for June 24.
