Area businesses get behind American Legion mission

With the American Legion Post 60 still working to get on their feet, area businesses have rallied around the organization with a slew of donations.

"The show of support from the business community and the community as a whole has been just wonderful," said post 60 commander, William "Buzz" Canady.

Canady said that in addition to the effort shown by the Pine Bluffs governing body to help secure the building, Capital Roofing and Lipps Lumber had gone out of their way donating material to fix the roof on the new building.

Canady also said that through the volunteer efforts of the Legion members, the new roof was nearly completed.

"The amount of hours and efforts shown by our members to get that new roof on has been tremendous," Canady said.

As with the donations for the building, several area businesses donated items for the legion’s silent auction just before Christmas, an effort to raise funds for the group.

"Again this community showed their support of our organization and that means a lot to all the veterans," Canady said.

In addition to fixing up the building, American Legion Post 60 is looking to increase its membership opportunities as they stand-up an American Legion Auxiliary.

"Mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters – any female relation of a legionnaire is eligible to join," said Canady.

The auxiliary will be headed up by Kathy Canady - those interested in joining should contact her at 245-3448.

The auxiliary will hold their first meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at the American Legion Post 60 building.

Along with the auxiliary, Canady said the Legion is always looking for new members and encouraged all honorably discharged veterans to join the group.
