United Blood Services in Cheyenne has issued an emergency appeal for blood donations. Due to the recent holidays, snowstorms and high usage, demand has outpaced supply significantly. All blood types are currently needed, especially O Negative.

United Blood Services in Cheyenne is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donors may call 638-3326 or visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org to make a convenient appointment to donate. Walk-ins are always welcome.

"Winter storms within the region drastically affected donations at our fixed site locations. Our blood drive schedule was very light during the last part of December with colleges and high schools on winter break, and employers who sponsor blood drives were short-staffed as people took time off to enjoy the holidays," said Jan Falk, center director of United Blood Services.

"Every two to three seconds in this country, someone needs blood," said Falk. "You never know when you or someone you love will be the one. We all expect blood to be available when we need it, but only a few of those who can give actually roll up their sleeves. We are asking our community to please take the time and come in and donate this week to ensure there is an adequate blood supply in the upcoming weeks."

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 to 17 years old must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.

United Blood Services has been this area’s non-profit community blood provider since 1965 and serves patients in 49 hospitals in Wyoming, Nebraska and Montana. The United Blood Services network is one of the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit blood service organizations, and is a founding member of America’s Blood Centers and the AABB, formerly the American Association of Blood Banks.
