The Pawnee Lady Coyotes completed their home stand with three wins and one loss, sending them on the road to Weldon Valley this weekend sitting on a 3-1 conference record and 9-1 overall.
On Friday, Pawnee proved an inhospitable host to their conference foe Prairie Lady Mustangs, as they dominated the boards each quarter to reach a 59-31 victory.
"We had balanced scoring and played tough defense," Lady Coyotes coach Laura Hodgson said. "We started to feel comfortable with our transition offense."
The hot hand for the night was Lyndee Johnson who found the bucket for 13 points including one three-pointer.
On Saturday, the Lady Coyotes played a slightly closer game against Pine Bluffs’ Lady Hornets, winning 49-36.
"Pine Bluffs is a solid team with good shooters and good ball handlers," Hodgson said. "This was our best all-around complete game. We played tough defense. We pressed without fouling and had 13 team steals."
Hodgson said the team also rebounded well, coming down with 22 offensive and 15 defensive balls.
"We also transitioned well and finished our lay ups," Hodgson continued. "We played well together."
Adele Cass came out on top in scoring with 16 points which included a trey.
Going into this past weekend’s contests, Hodgson’s squad had logged a split weekend as they lost to conference leader Fleming 23-39, then turned it around to out pace the Sterling junior varsity squad, 57-27. Those games were played Friday, Jan. 8 and Saturday, Jan. 9.
"Fleming is tough competition," Hodgson said. "They are tall and quick. We played good defense but couldn’t get our shots to fall. We shot 12 percent from the field."
Leading the Lady Coyotes in scoring was Kayla Konig with 11. She also was perfect from the charity strip at 5/5. Cass was hot from the outside finding the net for two three-pointers.
Facing off against the Sterling squad, Hodgson said her ladies played good defense and came out of their shooting slump from the night before.
"We played well as a team," she added.
Tasha Timm found the net for a game-high 20 points, followed by Cass with 16 in the effort. Cass and Deeona Johnston each found the bucket for a trey.
Looking ahead, Hodgson said the team will be working on limiting turnovers and continue working hard on playing good defense.
This weekend, the Lady Coyotes will host Weldon Valley in a conference game slated to begin on Friday at 5 p.m. and then will travel to Dayspring Christian on Saturday. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
