Pawnee’s Lady Coyotes are the owners of a 13-1 overall and 6-1 league record following weekend conference wins over Fleming (52-45) and Peetz (56-16).
"We played tough defense creating 19 steals for the game," Pawnee head coach Laura Hodgeson said of Friday’s game versus the Fleming Lady Wildcats. "In the first quarter we started off slow and were behind by eight, but finished the quarter down by five. We started the second quarter with a bang outscoring Fleming by four and putting us down by one at the half."
Hodgeson said the team focused on limiting second shots for the Lady Wildcats and maximizing opportunities in the second half.
"The third quarter for us was huge," she continued. "We outscored Fleming by eight points, three of which were from an outstanding half court shot at the buzzer by Kaeley Malcom after getting a steal. We held on to our lead in the fourth quarter."
Up by 13 when the Lady Wildcats pressed, Hodgeson said her Lady Coyotes turned the ball over too many times but were able to make their free throws and hold on for the win.
"We played very well," she added.
Adele Cass was the points leader Friday night. Malcom, Kayla Konig and Deeona Johnston each put up 11. Putting up treys were Cass with two and Malcom, Konig and Johnston with one each. Konig was also perfect from the charity stripe, netting four for four.
Though Hodgeson called the contest with the Peetz Lady Bulldogs a rough game, the Lady Coyotes ran away with the first canto 21-4. They added 17 in the second, while Peetz only put in a single bucket bringing the score to 38-5 at the half.
"We played good defense and played well as a team," Hodgeson said. "It was a rough game but we held our ground and came out with a win."
Peetz put up nine in the third stanza and two in the final period, while Pawnee added seven in the third and 11 in the fourth to account for the final 56-16 tally.
Konig was the high scorer with 16. She was joined atop the leader board by Johnston who found the net for 12. Konig hit from the outside to put in two three-pointers and Johnston had one. Cass hit a perfect four for four from the line.
The Lady Coyotes will take the court Friday night for another conference game versus the Prairie Mustangs at Prairie.
