Traveling to Guernsey Friday night, the Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets held off a strong second half attack to beat the Guernsey Lady Vikings 58-44. Saturday found the Lady Hornets back home hosting the Lady Warriors from Leyton in a contest that wasn’t even close as the Lady Hornets came away with the victory 64-25.

"We started out with the game with great shooting that got us out in front," said head coach Bob Cochran said of Friday’s game.

Owning the first quarter, the Lady Hornets jumped out to an 18-7 lead. The Lady Vikings fought back and kept things close in the second but the Lady Hornets headed to the locker room at the half up 31-19.

"Guernsey has some great post players so it challenged us defensively to contain them," Cochran said. "But overall our defense was solid.

Coming out of the third, each team put 14 points on the board while in the fourth the Lady Hornets nudged the Lady Vikings by two and the 58-44 win.

Cochran noted that the combination of Brittney Bowman and Johnna Graves each had the hot hands on the night combining for five three-pointers.

In the road game, senior Brittney Bowman was the top shooter on the night with 20 points while sophomore Laura Gross was the game’s top rebounder with nine.

In Saturday’s lopsided affair, the Lady Hornets opened the first quarter like a whirlwind and never looked back, more than doubling the Lady Warriors in every quarter.

"A great overall game," said Cochran. "Our defense didn’t allow them to score and our offense was very effective."

Cochran noted his offense was firing on all cylinders with the guards nailing down four three-point shots and post players hit well from the inside.

Up by a significant margin in the second half, Cochran was able to cycle members of the junior varsity squad into the game to give them some valuable varsity playing time.

Bowman again led the team in scoring with 15 buckets while Cassidy Smith was the squad’s top rebounder with 6.

Up next for the Lady Hornets is an unusual back-to-back set of home games with the Lady Hornets hosting the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes on Friday and the Lusk Lady Tigers on Saturday. JV action gets underway Friday at 4 p.m. while the varsity squad takes to the court at 7 p.m. Saturday, the games get underway with the JV tipping off at 1 p.m. and the varsity squad will start their show at 2:30 p.m.
