Trenton Culp, Grady Mikesell, Travis Harrington, Adan Gandara and Shawn Cole will join 215-pound second place finisher, Todd Baker and 171-pound fourth place finisher, Frankie Vossler this coming weekend at the Casper Event Center for the Wyoming State Wrestling Championship.

"We actually had eight kids qualify but one is not going to be able to make it," said wrestling head coach Chris Cooper.

Cooper was particularly pleased with his teams performance noting that 80 percent of his squad advanced to state compared to last year when he took five wrestlers to the big-show.

"A couple of the kids wrestling at state have been there before, so not only do they know what they’re doing there, they can help some of our wrestlers, who this is a first time at state," Cooper said.

Cooper said that unlike the regular season, preparing for the state tournament involved watching extensive footage of those opponents his squad will face.

"A large portion of the team drew some pretty tough opponents in the first round," Cooper said.

"So just getting past the first day is going to be really tough for some of these guys, they’re really going to have to battle to advance" Cooper added.

Baker, the school’s top placer, is focused on taking down Huellet’s Leiland Pfiefer, two-time state champion in the 215-pound weight class and the wrestler responsible for knocking Baker off the top spot at regionals.

"The kid’s only been beaten twice his whole career," Cooper said speaking of Pfiefer.

"But if anyone is going to beat him, Todd (Baker) is the wrestler to do it," he said.

"On any given day, any wrestler can beat another," Cooper said.

"And that’s the attitude we’re going to take with us up to Casper," he said.

Official weigh-ins start at 7 a.m. Friday morning and matches get underway at 9:30 a.m. Championship matches are scheduled to begin Saturday.
