With winter giving way to spring, the Laramie County Library System is helping county patrons keep busy with new events at the main library in Cheyenne and the branches at Pine Bluffs and Burns.

The month’s events started off this week with book discussion on "The Weight of Water" by Anita Shrever. Moving through this month patrons are invited to prepare for the next discussion night by signing out a copy of "A Tender Bar" by J.R. Moehringer. Discussion on this memoir is slated for April 6 at 7 p.m. at the Pine Bluffs branch.

Pre-schoolers have a full slate of activities in the Fun for Kids series at the Pine Bluffs branch. Each activity begins at 10 a.m. and are filled with songs, stories, treats, activities, crafts and more. Anyone with a pre-schooler will want to mark these dates on their calendar:

• March 11, "Fun for Kids: Here Come the Elephants"

• March18, "Fun for Kids: Bubbles!"

• March 25, "Fun for Kids: Go Fly a Kite."

Both branch libraries will host 30-Second Mysteries for students in grades four through eight. Students are invited to test their detective skills with this challenging mystery. Refreshments will be served. This event is scheduled for March 16 at 3:30 p.m. in Pine Bluffs and March 20 at 10 p.m. in Burns.

Also set in Burns is ALEX. This after-school pirate-themed program and scavenger hunt will take place at Burns Elementary School March 11 starting a 4 p.m. Students in the first through sixth grades are welcome to participate.

Several activities are also planned at the Cheyenne location for those in the younger set. On March 14 at 1:59 p.m.(since pi starts out 3.14159) students in grades four through six can participate in Celebrate Pi Day. Get in the "pi" spirit with games, crafts and a pi treat or two in the Storytime Room.

Students from seventh through the twelfth grades are invited to dinner and a movie in the Cottonwood Room March 19. Little Italy comes to the library with a special screening of "Cinema Paradiso" and a great Italian meal. This is an after hours event beginning at 6 p.m. Students must be picked up by 8 p.m. To register, call 634-3561.

Also, on March 19, is "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" at 4 p.m. for third through six graders; and on March 30 is a magic show featuring Dan-J for students in eighth through twelfth grades.

Adults certainly are not left out of the mix. In addition to reading "A Tender Bar," from March 1 through 15 the libraries want patrons to Get Excited About Reading by checking out books by Wyoming authors. One of those authors will be on-hand March 15 at 7 p.m. in Cheyenne. Amanda Cabot will present a Writer’s Workshop: Getting to the End" that will help writers with a brilliant premise, an amazing opening or a prospective best seller find a way to finish their work. Cabot will provide concrete techniques and tips to improve one’s writing and finish a book.

Also in Cheyenne for the adults is a talk by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward P. Jones. The author of "The Known World" will appear March 11 at 7 p.m.
