The Burns Broncs faced the Saratoga Panthers at Saratoga in Friday nights return from Christmas break. After posting a 20-point lead over the first three quarters, the knotted 17-point fourth period gave the Panthers no progress against the visitors as night ended with a 69-49 Broncs victory. The Broncs stayed on the road, traveling to Lingle on Saturday. Lingle came out tough and earned an early 16-9 lead, but the Broncs prevailed in the final three cantos to come home with at 69-38 win.
“Burns was able to use some hot shooting in the first half to build a lead,” coach Sean Patterson said. “We were pleased with our offensive execution in this game. We didn’t always have our best effort on the defensive end, but we were able put the ball in the hole enough to overcome some of those lapses.”
Patterson said a key to this game was the Broncs ability to control the paint on both ends of the court.
“We finished well inside on the offensive end and kept the Panthers from getting close looks at the basket,” Patterson said. “Overall, the kids did a great job competing after a couple weeks of just practice.”
The games high scorer was Travis Romsa with 16 points.
After scoring in the single digits in Saturdays start, the Broncs put up 20, 21, and 19 in the remaining periods to amass their 69 points.
“At Lingle on Saturday afternoon, Burns found themselves down early,” said Patterson. “Lingle shot the ball well to start the game and the Doggers were able to build a nine-point lead early in the second quarter.”
Patterson said his squad did not move the ball as well as it needed to start the game, but his athletes were able to make some adjustments and keep with the game plan.
“We stepped up our effort on the defensive end and continued to try and control the tempo of the game,” Patterson said. “The Broncs were able to finish the game on a 55-15 run.”
“A tremendous amount of credit goes to our kids; they didn’t get rattled and kept fighting,” Patterson said. “We are very proud of the way they stepped up and competed.”
Colton Wright put 13 points on the board as the games high scorer. Romsa followed close with 12.
The Burns Junior Varsity team also earned a victory over Saratoga on Friday. Their record is now 6-1 on the season. The Freshmen/Sophomore team was off this week. They traveled to Pine Bluffs on Jan. 9 to open the New Year.
The varsity Broncs have a challenging and busy week. They hosted Mitchell on Tuesday, will travel to Southeast on Friday, and play Wright at home on Saturday.
