The Pawnee girls did not look tired during their busy week last week, as they added three wins to bring their record to 3-0 conference, and 9-0 overall.
Action started Tuesday, Jan. 10, with a non-conference win on the road against Weldon Valley.
“The girls played good defense against the Warriors with a 3-31 half time score and 15-58 victory,” coach Laura Hodgson said, adding, “The team passed and shot the ball well.”
The pace of the game was set with 19 to 2 opening quarter. Kaylie Hahn and Lyndee Johnston led the charge against the Lady Warriors, putting up 12 points each. Morgan Sanders added eight to the team’s effort. Leading in rebounds was Adele Cass with a solid 11 against Weldon Valley.
Thursday, Jan. 12, Pawnee welcomed conference competitor, Prairie, and sent them home with a tough, one-point loss, 42-41.
Hodgson explained Prairie’s tough defense forced only 32 percent shooting from the field, adding their average has been almost 40 percent for the season.
“Prairie is well coached and plays hard 100 percent of the time. We pulled out a hard fought game,” Hodgson said.
Johnston again shared the title of lead scorer, this time with Sanders. The two mirrored each other with 11 points. Cass chipped eight points in. Tasha Timm pulled down eight rebounds, with Hahn and Johnston behind her with six.
“After a tough game versus Prairie and not playing as well as expected, the girls came out against Pine Bluffs with intensity and fire,” Hodgson said of Friday’s match up. “We played tough defense stopping Pine’s inside game creating 21 steals. We passed the ball well and ran the floor resulting in 21 assists.”
The Lady Coyotes fought off any sting from the Lady Hornets, sending Pine Bluffs back to the hive with a 63-39 defeat. It was exceptional play from Pawnee that secured the win.
“We shot 48 percent from the field, our best shot percentage of the season. It was the best game the team as played so far defensively and offensively,” said Hodgson. “Pine is well coached and is always a great game. It was nice to see our players rise the challenge.”
Cass led the pack on the court with 22 points. Hahn was the only other scorer in the double digits, with 18. Johnston led rebounding at six, with Hahn sharing second with Sanders at five.
This week Pawnee hit the road for Tuesday’s conference game in Briggsdale (results will be in next week’s Pine Bluffs Post) and is back on the bus for conference play against Weldon Valley on Friday.
