Pawnee Coyote Brye Brunelle sends the ball to the basket avoiding the defensive arm of Pine Bluffs Hornet Taylor Fornstrom.

The Coyotes began their weekly winning streak against Weldon Valley, wounding the Warriors with an 86-48 win on the road.

With a 13-point lead heading into the half, the Coyotes weren’t satisfied keeping it close.

“Weldon Valley played very well in the first half, and we kind of struggled to get things going like we have been,” coach Tim Brunelle explained. “In the third quarter we scored 27 points and held them to 11 by creating some turnovers and running the fast break.”

Four of the Coyotes led the pack with double digit scoring. Coach Brunelle called it a “well-balanced game” which showed in the stats.

David Martin and Zeb Durst were top scorers sinking 17 and 15, Durst also added five rebounds. Kevin Shoemaker put up 13 points with five rebounds. Brye Brunelle gained a double-double by scoring 12 and rebounding 11 times. B. Brunelle also had seven assists. Miika Jokinen came close to double digit scoring with nine and contributed four rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Pawnee played comfortable at home Thursday, winning 68-42 over Prairie for a conference win. “D” was the letter of the day in Pawnee that night.

“This is the best defensive effort we have had all season. We had a 47 -11 lead at half, which was due to the pressure we put on the ball and getting in the passing lanes,” Coach Brunelle said.

Shoemaker shined in the win by sinking in 20 points and pulling down 10 boards. B. Brunelle put up 13 points, also adding five assists and four steals. Jokinen delivered good balance again with nine points and five rebounds.

“Kevin (Shoemaker) was outstanding tonight, hitting 10 out of 13 from the field,” said Coach Brunelle. “Our ball movement was sharp offensively, and we pushed the tempo.”

The Coyotes were riding high as they faced off against the Pine Bluffs Hornets Friday. Pawnee howled over the Hornets for their 68-55 win at home.

“Our fast start in the first quarter was really the difference in the outcome of this game. We led 15-2 at the end of the first quarter, and wound up winning by 13,” Coach Brunelle said. “Pine Bluffs battled the whole way as we knew they would. Fortunately, each time they made a run at us, we were able to answer with one of our own.”

Doing more than hold his own was B. Brunelle, who scored 27 points, had nine rebounds and five assists. Shoemaker again made big plays adding 16 to Pawnee’s tally and rebounding 10 times. Rebounding was one of they keys to making their record 9-0 on the season.

“We stayed strong on the glass all night and limited their second chance opportunities,” explained Coach Brunelle. “They are a very well coached team and we are glad to be able to come away with the win.”

Pawnee is set to take the show on the road as they traveled to Briggsdale Tuesday and head to Weldon Valley Friday. The results of both games will be in next week’s issue of the Pine Bluffs Post.
