The Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets added a game in the win and loss columns over the weekend, losing to a tough Pawnee team 63-39 at Grover, and then defeating Southeast at home by a score of 49-34.
“Pawnee has a very good basketball team,” said Pine Bluffs head coach Bob Cochran. “To be successful against this type of team you must play a solid game in each phase. We didn’t play with very much confidence.”
Andrea Baker led the Lady Hornets at the net, sinking the ball for 10 points. She was 50 percent from three-point land, connecting for two of her four attempts. Baker was also busy under the basket, nabbing a game-high seven boards. Kodi Ragsdale was second in points with nine.
Heading to their home court, the Lady Hornets prepared to face a Southeast team Cochran said is “fundamentally very sound on defense.”
“You must be aggressive on offense or they will take you out of your game,” Cochran added. “I felt that we played too passive the first half but started to take the ball at them in the second half. Defensively I felt that we played solid throughout the game. Our half court trap kept them off balance at times. We wanted to get better on the rebounding phase of the game and I believe we improved.”
The stats prove that to be true. In Fridays contest, six players combined for 20 boards. On Saturday, eight players — all who saw action Friday — nabbed 29 off the glass. Kayla Steger came away with seven to lead the team.
The points leader was Laura Gross with 17. Conner Graves added 11 points of her own.
“This week we go to Morrill and Burns,” said Cochran. “Morrill has a very solid team with some size so we must be prepared to play that type of team. On Saturday Burns will present different problems in that they will be smaller and challenge you from the outside more.”
The game against Burns is “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” day. Fans are encouraged to don pink in support of the Lady Broncs’ fundraising efforts to end breast cancer.
