Pine Bluffs sixth at state academic challenge

April 19, 2018

Pine Bluffs academic challenge team members took sixth place at the state meet held in Riverton last week.

Team members included Scout Pachel, Samuel Garcia, Taylor Crouse, Christina Yeley-Ritter, Greg Fornstrom, Reagan Pachel, Joey Romans, Diana Sanchez, Monica Sujka, Jose and Juliana Baca-Martinez and Twyla Butler.

Eight teams competed in the tournament all-state tournament, held April 9 in Riverton.

“I’m really proud of our kids,” PBHS coach Eric Kestner said in a written statement. “We missed out on the big prizes and scholarships but we continually improved throughout the year.”

In academic challenge, students are asked a number of questions ranging from geography to science to complicated math problems.

It’s also a grueling season that runs from September through mid-April with an event roughly each month, Kestner said.

“It was great to see how many of our students stuck with it and continued through the practices and actively worked at getting better,” Kestner said. “The program at this school is still very young, so we should be a real force to be reckoned with in another year or two.”

Kestner noted that small schools have historically excelled against their counterparts from larger schools. Riverside (Basin) eeked out a win over Cheyenne East, as an example.

Fifteen students received academic all-state honors for their work over the course of the season, including Fornstrom.
