Happy New Year! The new set of days came in pretty quiet around Albin. Some went bowling. Others had friends and family over. And a few young and adventurous dressed up and welcomed the change in high style. No matter how you brought it in, may it treat you like an old friend, giving when you lack, comforting when you cry, and celebrating when you win. So begins another quiet winter around us. A little political and town business might break up the monotony. January 12 is the town council...

Isn’t it an odd way of life to celebrate with gifts, blessings and loved ones last week but turn around this week to remember the past year and the friends and moments we will take with us to the new year even if only in our minds. Our small community has had many lively moments and unfortunately lost many good friends. We move on and bring the good times with us. Continuing on with the good news in 2017, many friends celebrate their new year this week. January 3rd finds Jim Sorensen and L...

Albin is a great little town for many reasons. This time of year, we often are blanketed in white. The fresh snow stays undisturbed on some streets for perhaps the entire day. The light dusting doesn’t require a plow and it seems to keep neighbors in where it is safe and warm. The white blanket this past week didn’t, however, keep any heat in our area. It was cold outside. How cold was it? It was so cold, cows were throwing themselves at electric fences. It was so cold, the dogs had to put jum...

Winter came suddenly this year. It always surprises some of us, even after living in Wyoming for years or even a lifetime, how we can have 50 degree weather and the next be whipped around in chilling 60 mile per hour winds with snow on the way. Maybe it isn’t that winter came suddenly, it is that we were spoiled with extra days of autumn. But don’t remain spoiled in thinking you will have any extra days to bake goodies and write your letters to Santa Claus and family and friends far away. Just a...

Did you dig out from under the turkey just to find another container filled with leftovers? Maybe you visited loved ones and got wrapped up in hugs and kisses. Whatever reason you have to miss giving us your news, we forgive you. As long as you get it to us before the new year. Everyone had at least a few happy moments in 2016. Why not share them with all of us. A treasure stored is a treasure lost. We look forward to hearing from you in the next few weeks. Many folks around the neighborhood lit...

After the leaves change, or often before, the first snow falls in Albin. We all watched the leaves change, fall and blow away in a warm late year wind. Then we waited. Almost a month of open windows and propane tanks sitting idle, we waited. In true cowboy style, the storm came in when it was ready, stayed as long as it took to do the job, and left things, at least the snow melt, a little better than it found it. A man who holds close to cowboy ethics celebrates another year of weathering...

With all the happenings around the world last week, Albin stayed on the straight and narrow. Like an old farm dog who peeks up from his nap to watch the feral cat get himself in trouble with the rabid skunk. We are no less interested than the pot stirrers who want to make everything about fear and hate. Except we prefer, like the farm dog, to sit on the porch, do what is asked of us and protect our loved ones in time of need. No matter which way you voted, or what you think may happen, Albin wil...

What a beautiful long summer we have. Except for the cool autumn nights, you wouldn’t know we are two weeks from Thanksgiving. Be thankful for the time and the weather that you have. Moments will pass and weather will change. Worrying about either will do nothing more than rob you of the blessing of being present. Many people like to steal away a few moments with a good book. A great opportunity to help your heist of time and our school is the book fair. Don’t forget to visit the book fair thi...

Isn’t it April that comes in like a lion? Perhaps since the weather has been so kind to us, it decided to blow in the new month. Nothing can blow you away like a good book. Remember the book fair at Albin Elementary. If you cannot attend, you can submit an order online at www.scholastic.com/fair. The school needs orders to continue to offer book fair. All purchases benefit our school. Ghosts and goblins were out in force this weekend. The Halloween Carnival offered a blast of treats and t...

What a wonderful time of year. The weatherman actually used “wonderful day” and “local forecast” in the same sentence recently. It is a great time to get outside and catch a few warm late year rays. Shining bright like a sun ray is the new Albin Ranch Mini Market. Liliana has opened her doors to customers. Her friendly disposition and goods are just what we needed in Albin. Store hours are 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Stop by and see what she has on the shelves. Halloween evening, beginning at 5 p.m., t...

Is it the wisp of corn dust or simply the strong winds ushering in the new season that has changed the air outside. Both leave us with amazing views. The combines rolling slowly over their dried golden harvest and the crisp leaves being lifted into the sky, hopefully dropping in our neighbors pile to rake. Almost poetic words that Bob Dylan might use. We may not win a Nobel Prize for “blowing in the wind,” but we certainly have a few prizes in people. Some are celebrating their birthday. Adr...

When tragedy happens, some may tell you to have “the faith of a potato farmer.” That is, believing in what you cannot see and knowing good things are bound to come up. Richard Larson was a big potato man. Not only the kind that goes well with roast beef on Sunday but the kind that we worship before Sunday lunch. His life was one of believing in things that he couldn’t see, giving what he could to others, encouraging hope, as well as laughing and loving. In his 88 years, he served in publi...

Another month has begun. As we edge closer to the end of the year, the warmth of the summer sun is just a glint in our eye as everything around us prepares for a long winter nap. Have no fear cold blooded friends. The propane company is just a call away. Speaking of lighting a fire, a few of our friends and neighbors will blow out quite a few candles this week . Barry Ward gets a wish granted October 9. He may use it for a championship basketball team. Celebrating birthdays on October 10 are...

If you have lived with any blessings at all, you have experienced a few of those fall days that seem to be gems sparkling in the fabric of the blanket of cold weather. Those days when the blue of the sky only pales in beauty to the last fresh green of the leaves before they change to the golden brown and bright orange of sleep. And the tall northern pines seem to stretch their needles to the sky and blend their evergreen with the late year bright blue. Take a walk on one of those days and every...

There is a legend that claims the Native Americans used the seven sisters, a constellation, to tell them when to reap and sow. With all the technology the world offers today, the best guide to our weather is still the stars above us and the living animals and crops around us. The mullee and white tail deer started their search for foliage and cover which means hunting season is not long off. The corn in the field is just about dry enough to harvest. With no help from any “app,” we can saf...

A coolness is in the air, a different color of blue brightens our afternoon skies. A change is in the air. Maybe the weather thought since we have settled into the new school year, it, too, could settle into fall. This season of warm afternoons and cool mornings always comes a little too soon for the youngsters. As we age, it seems, we welcome fall more and more. It is a yearly reminder that even though some of us may be past the growing and fast-paced days of summer in our life, there are...

Just about the time we all get a little gloomy that summer has slipped by, a whole bunch of bright yellow faces remind us that sunny new beauty is not just for the summer. The fields of sunflowers have started turning their faces to the late summer sun and as they smile towards the sky, we lift our spirits up for one last blast of harvesting summer rays. The harvesters have all returned to their homes and the streets of Albin are a little less busy. However, Aaron Anderson and the town council...

Everyone likes a good washing before they take on a new adventure or start a new project. Evidently the ground is no different. All of Eastern Laramie County received a nice rain last Thursday evening. The same night our students were attending their Back-To-School nights. Some even had some isolated flooding with the sudden and heavy rain. But the burst of fresh water was as welcome a smell as the sharpened pencils and paper in the school hallways. Remember to be extra careful these first few...

The Fiesta “Jesus of Nazarene” had a wonderful attendance. Everyone enjoyed the red and green chili. The seven bikes were won by Avery Anderson, Eduarde Gurrda, Vanessa Pery, Angel Arzola, Max Lonzano, Leslie Guterrie and Reece Chauy. A big thanks to all who helped with the event especially the community center staff. A big birthday wish going out to Julie Rabou. And a big happy anniversary to Jason and Jillian McLaughlin. May everyone celebrating enjoy their special day. Many big congrats out...

Have you ever noticed how quickly changes come in our Wyoming seasons? Well, of course you have, you live here. Earlier this week, the cool morning start was a few degrees below what it usually is. It was that first morning when we all realize a short autumn and long winter are not long off. It still warms up into the 80’s, but the nights remind us as the days get longer the coolness will linger long after dawn. The Town Council meeting is scheduled for tonight, Thursday August 11 at 7 p.m. R...

Every life has its share of storms. We all learn to weather through them. But the storm that hit Pine Bluffs Wednesday, showed us all that a little help from our friends serves as a nice shelter after storms. Our thoughts are with all the residents of Pine Bluffs as they continue to clean, repair and rebuild their homes and businesses. Only a few birthdays on our calendar this week. Teegan McLaughlin will turn 8 August 6. He is sure to have a storm of fun that day and hopefully every day. Happy...

About 50 miles west of us there is a little rodeo going on for 10 days. Cheyenne Frontier Days is a great opportunity for family and friends to get their cowboy on. Many of our neighbors volunteer their time, contributing to the 2,500 volunteers who keep the fun rolling. Whether you volunteer or just wander through the exhibits and villages, and take in a rodeo and show, CFD is like a big ol’ backyard. Lassoing another year is Kaden Malm on August 1 and Melissa Nichols August 5. Lots of cake a...

It happens every year. A summer storm of wind and hail blows through our area leaving us or our neighbors frantic about the uncontrollable loss. This years storm hit Burns and Hillsdale pretty hard. Many roofs on homes, cars and crops were nothing more than a mangled mess Monday morning. Please keep those affected in your thoughts and prayers. Sometimes sending a card or dropping off dinner in a dish brings those families so much more than words and food. Every year, whether it is stormy, hot...

If life is like a parade, then Albin Day must be the band with the majorette team. The music and the action always draw you in and make you pencil in the day for next year. It may only last one day and, by most everyone’s standards, is a smaller town festival. But just like the band with the baton girls, they may pass by in an instant, but they get your foot tapping and bring a smile to your face. Money makes everyone smile as well. Five lucky people were smiling at the end of Albin Day when t...

onday night, did you notice all the “candles” being lit for our countries birthday? There may be no fireworks big enough to show our love and respect for the great America, but we sure do try. Another thing we try hard at is keeping our town great. If you have any ideas to improve Albin, take them to the town council meeting July 14 at 7 p.m. The council has an opportunity to apply for 6th Penny Tax funds and would like to encourage you to send them any ideas you might have. If you have any que...
