  • Trail Days declared a success

    Polly Taylor|Aug 6, 2015

The 65th Annual Trail Days has now been here and is over, and by all accounts it was considered an unqualified success despite that there were other festivities going on in the surrounding area. The weather cooperated, providing lots of hot weather and sunshine during the day, and cooler breezy night for activities like the street dances and the alumni banquet, and friends and family members streamed into Pine Bluffs to reconnect, visit, and catch up on everything that had happened since the 201...

  • Darden chosen Trail Days Queen for 2nd year

    Polly Taylor|Jul 30, 2015

It's difficult enough when you are competing for a crown once, but when a young woman is chosen two years in a row to represent her community as it's queen, in this case as Trail Days Queen, it's very special, despite the fact that there were not any other applicants for the honor for a second year in a row. Brooke Darden, who served as the 2014 Trail Days Queen, will once again represent Pine Bluffs this week during the festivities. Darden's mother and aunt, Derede Darden and Georgeanne Wearin...

  • Summer is not over yet

    Polly Taylor|Jul 30, 2015

It's true that Trail Days is this week, and doesn't end until all of the mud has been washed off on Sunday afternoon, after the co-ed mud volleyball tournament, but that's just beginning of more activities scheduled to take Pine Bluffs to the end of summer and into the new school year. However, before the mud volleyball tournament there is the 15th Annual Pine Bluffs Trail Days 2015 Longhorn Stampede on Saturday. It begins with registration at 6:30 a.m., at the Pine Bluffs Community Center, and...

    Polly Taylor|Jul 23, 2015

Last Wednesday night saw a full house with a number of parents representing all parts of Laramie County School District2, speaking out against the proposed random drug testing policy, which was up for a second reading and approval by the Board of Trustees. The majority of parents presented statistics and opinions contained in surveys done by different federal and private organizations, stating that random drug testing does not inhibit the use of drugs or alcohol by those students who use them,...

The United States Department of Agriculture released the numbers for April thru June, for the mountain states of Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, and the number are up across the board, except in New Mexico, which saw a decrease in production. This past Friday night marked the fourth rodeo of the Double Bar G Summer series, and there are only two dates left before buckles and all-around winners are named during Trail Days in Pine Bluffs on July 31. This week saw some new names rise to the top, while some of those at the top remained there, and others, well, we can't all have winning times. The Kimball County Sheriff's Department received a call at 6:39 p.m. on Saturday evening, and Sgt. • Rodeos, cowboys....and dirt

    Polly Taylor|Jul 2, 2015

It was a beautiful but dusty evening at the Double Bar G Rodeo Friday night. Someone forgot to spray water over the floor of the arena, and it didn't take much to create big clouds of dust. By the time it was over a lot of people wanted to do nothing more than stand under a shower and rinse the dirt off. This writer was feeling the grit between her teeth, and scrubbing dirt off her camera and bad, and from places she never expected to find the annoying stuff. This week wasn't a good one for...

  • Take a historic walk at a historic museum

    Polly Taylor|Jun 25, 2015

There is no doubt that museums in small rural communities, such as the Texas Trail Museum Pine Bluffs, play an important role in capturing the history of the area and preserving it for the generations to come, especially when they are located inside of a building that has been preserved from a towns' past. And there is also no doubt, that an organization like the Pine Bluffs Lions Club, which conducts a historic walk each year in some part of Pine Bluffs and eastern Laramie County, is doing...

  • Budget approved by council

    Polly Taylor|Jun 18, 2015

It was not the most talked about item on Monday night's agenda, and received no public comments, but the budget for FY 2015-2016 passed it's third and final reading with very little discussion despite the fact several changes had been made since the last reading. Equipment replacement in the amount of $23,000 was removed from the budget. The line item was created for the purpose of acquiring equipment during the 2014-2015 budget year, which has been done. Several items, however, were added to ne...

  • Bulls take center stage at Friday night rodeo

    Polly Taylor|Jun 18, 2015

It doesn't matter how hard a rider tries to stay on a bull or a steer, if he doesn't want you on his back you're going to go, and with the bulls and steers at the Double Bar G Rodeo Friday night in Pine Bluffs, they knew exactly how to get what they want. The animals at Friday night's event put on quite a show, once rid of their riders, running back and forth, howling their displeasure, and even charging those standing outside the fence on occasion. About the only thing they didn't do was dance...

  • Town council approves plan for mosquito spraying

    Polly Taylor|Jun 4, 2015

The Pine Bluffs Town Council approved a request from Circle S Aviation for a congested area flight plan. It's that time of the year when mosquitos are going to become more evident, with the heavy rains the area has received. In the past Circle S has provided the Town of Pine Bluffs with aerial coverage to help eradicate the disease-carrying pests. This year, in anticipation of deluge of applications to the FAA office by other companies providing the same type of service in other areas, Circle S...

The Friday Night =G Rodeo series resumed in Pine Bluffs last week, with cowboys and cowgirls from all over the states of Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska. One cowgirl was from Colorado by way of Florida. Despite the cold, damp windy weather the rain stayed at bay, and all of the events were completed, although the Steer Riding and Open Bull Riding events did not pay out as the steers and bulls were in rare form, and not one of the riders was able to stay on for the required six or eight seconds....

  • Just a Few Thoughts...

    Polly Taylor|May 21, 2015

Well, the ceremonies are over and done for another year – graduation ceremonies this is – and it's time to break out the 'pic-a-nic' baskets (I always loved when Yogi Bear talked about 'pic-a-nic' baskets), the sun screen, lawn chairs and all the other accoutrements that go along with summer. But I digress. Superintendent Jack Cozort, who will shortly be entering his last month, officially, with our school district gave away his age when he announced this past weekend, in Pine Bluffs and Bur...
