Known both as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941; however the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-1783). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle created a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration...

As we waited for “Titan,” the forecasted blizzard to hit last weekend, I wondered why we name winter storms. We’ve had “Sandy,” “Iago,” “Gandolph,” “Q,” and who can forget our favorite little fishy “Nemo” from the Disney movie of the same name? According to the National Weather Service there are five reasons to name winter storms: • Naming a storm raises awareness. • Attaching a name makes it much easier to follow a weather system’s progress. • A storm with a name takes on a personality all its own, which adds...

Sorry to have to disappoint the Mayan Calendar that predicted the end of civilization that we know of, but we are all still here. As Friday’s dawn began sweeping across the globe, there was no sign of an apocalypse. Do you ever wonder why we fall for such nonsense? Maybe we should just live for the day and be thankful for what we have and not worry so much about will happen in the future. I know I’m very thankful for the past week’s snow storm that dropped 8 inches. We hope everyone was home when the snow began to fall on Tuesday night. I...
