  • Pine Bluffs Elementary School

    Tonia Copeland|Mar 5, 2015

Despite being in the works for a decade, there has been no bond issue, no rise in property taxes, and still no new elementary school. Residents should not expect a rise in taxes because there will be no bond issue since the state of Wyoming funds new schools, according to Kim Nelson, Laramie County School District #2 Facilities Manager. "We have been trying to get (the project) back into the budget," Nelson said. "Ten, twelve years ago, (the state) purchased land outside of town, because there...

    Bill Sniffin|Mar 5, 2015

Last fall, Wyoming’s present and future peacemakers learned about a new hero for them to emulate, when a young Lander man was killed while trying to break up a fight in Laramie. I knew Joe McGowan his entire life. If there ever was a nicer young man, I have not found him. He had no enemies. When described by his friends, his big smile and wonderful attitude were always mentioned. An artist and a skateboarder, he was a student at the University of Wyoming and looking forward to a wonderful l...

    Rob Langrell|Mar 5, 2015

A furious comeback fell just short last week for the Pawnee High boys’ basketball team in the Colorado 1A District 4 tournament. The Coyotes trailed by 11 points in the final quarter against Peetz in the opening round of the tournament at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling and rallied back to take a one-point lead with 27 seconds left. However, Peetz hit a shot in the final seconds to give it a 52-50 win and end Pawnee’s season in heart-breaking fashion. “This game was very evenly matched, as we thought it would be, and came down to the e...

They lost to host Big Horn, 57-45, in the consolation semifinals to end their season with a 17-6 record. A win in that game would have propelled them into this week's state tournament. The Coyotes dropped a 42-35 decision to Heritage Christian last Wednesday in the opening round of the Colorado Class 1A District 4 tournament at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling. The loss ends Pawnee’s season at 2-17. Pawnee won its final two regular-season games. It had played Heritage Christian in December and was blown out 60-30. Submitted|Mar 5, 2015

With the season approaching when baby chicks and ducklings are typically bought and sold around the state, a Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) representative says even cute chicks can sometimes carry harmful germs. “While many animal species can carry salmonella bacteria, baby poultry, even if they appear healthy and clean, are a common source of the germ,” said Tiffany Lupcho, WDH surveillance epidemiologist. Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps and other symptoms in humans. Young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and tho...

The soils we work with now are not the same quality of soil that was present when farmers and ranchers originally began production agriculture on this land. The soil is lacking carbon, or organic matter as it is often referred to, when compared to the virgin soil our ancestors tilled for the first time when the...
