Eileen W. Poelma, 93, of Carpenter, passed away on May 1, 2014 at her daughter's home in Alamogordo, N.M. Eileen was born on Oct. 10, 1920 in Albin to Martin and Effie Ruth. She married James Poelma on Sept. 10, 1941 in Pine Bluffs. They were married for 64 years. Pine Bluffs track teams venture to Torrington for the 2A East Regional competition Friday, after many track athletes competed well at the SEWAC meet Saturday, with the Lady Hornets taking second overall. The Lady Hornets managed the second-place victory with 64 points, losing to Lingle-Ft. Laramie (114). The Hornets placed fourth in the meet with 47 points. Burns Broncs track athletes face a busy schedule this weekend with 2A East Regional competition after coming out of the SEWAC meet Saturday, performing well. The Broncs took second place overall with 91 points, as the Lady Broncs took fourth place at the meet with 58 points overall. The Pine Bluffs Knights of Columbus held its 10th Annual Golf Tournament Saturday in hopes of filling the event for the first time ever, but came up one team short of the anticipated 18 teams. "We have never filled this event," said Knight Dennis Talich. "And that remains true today." A Burns Junior High School athlete is hurdling himself over his competition in order to be the best. Alex Pyle, seventh grader at Burns Jr./Sr. High School, enjoys playing a lot of sports. Pyle is currently competing in track. "I've placed in every meet I've gone to, from first to fifth," Pyle said. Pyle competes in the 400 meter dash, 75 hurdles, 200 hurdles and high jump. Hello to all! Was this past Sunday a Mother’s Day one to remember? We had semi-planned a barbecue. With 6+ inches by 1p.m., we cranked up the grill and continued on. After a few days of sunshine and rain, a snow storm has hit Wyoming. This is not a record breaking storm however, it is server, according to the National Weather Service. Interstate 80 was closed down, schools had snow days and residents were asked to refrain from unnecessary travel. The citizens and the Drys were the rival factors, the Citizens standing for a licensed saloon and the Drys for no saloon. The outcome is that Pine Bluffs is to have a saloon for another year. I wish I had all the money I’ve spent over the years trying to control cheat grass on our farm. Cheat grass has been a problematic weed in winter wheat production for as long as anyone can remember. My grandfather and father were battling cheat grass when I was a young boy starting out farming. We were conventionally tilling our ground in a winter wheat/ summer fallow cropping rotation. The Pine Bluffs FFA Horticulture class showed off its colorful assortment of plants during their new greenhouse opening on Friday, May 9. Billy’s Barnyard greenhouse is located between the high school’s track and the high school. These plants are for sale. The Horticulture class has been working on their collection of plants since February. They planted their seeds in biodegradable plant trays for easy planting.
