  • Budget approved by council

    Polly Taylor|Jun 18, 2015

It was not the most talked about item on Monday night's agenda, and received no public comments, but the budget for FY 2015-2016 passed it's third and final reading with very little discussion despite the fact several changes had been made since the last reading. Equipment replacement in the amount of $23,000 was removed from the budget. The line item was created for the purpose of acquiring equipment during the 2014-2015 budget year, which has been done. Several items, however, were added to ne...

  • Vintage stories about state political figures

    Bill Sniffin|Jun 18, 2015

Over the years, a person in my line of work has heard hundreds of stories from politicians. A great many of them are funny and memorable. Recently in Laramie, several such stories were told from the same podium and I would like to share them with you. At the salute to the state’s 125th anniversary of statehood event, some people with political backgrounds shared several good stories. Milward Simpson is director of the state’s Arts, Parks and Cultural Resources Department. He is also the nam...

  • Don't spread illness with splashes

    Submitted|Jun 18, 2015

While splashing in the waters of Wyoming’s pools and lakes is a favorite summer pastime for many families, swimmers should be careful to avoid catching or spreading recreational water illnesses. “It is important to prevent germs from getting into pools and lakes. When germs get into the waters where we are having fun, they can steal that fun by causing diseases such as cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis and shigellosis,” said Katie Bryan, epidemiologist with the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH). “Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much contamination t...

  • Bulls take center stage at Friday night rodeo

    Polly Taylor|Jun 18, 2015

It doesn't matter how hard a rider tries to stay on a bull or a steer, if he doesn't want you on his back you're going to go, and with the bulls and steers at the Double Bar G Rodeo Friday night in Pine Bluffs, they knew exactly how to get what they want. The animals at Friday night's event put on quite a show, once rid of their riders, running back and forth, howling their displeasure, and even charging those standing outside the fence on occasion. About the only thing they didn't do was dance...

  • Albin News

    Charlene Smith|Jun 18, 2015

Sunday evening was ushered in with a crack of lightening, and buckets of rain fell all around Albin. The rain will end one day soon. While the hoses and sprinklers are turned off, the snakes seem to be coming out to act like hoses and scatter all over like water from our sprinklers. There were four black little fellas spotted in the Smith back yard. One was so bold as to curl up on the front door stoop. Needless to say, no Smiths ventured out the front door that day. A good excuse to go out...

  • Looking Back

    Jun 18, 2015

1 Years Ago June 17, 1915 Hats off to Burns We understand that Burns has finally decided not to celebrate the Fourth this year and the people of Pine Bluffs feel like extending her a vote of thanks, knowing that this decision was rendered because we were putting on a celebration here. It was thought for some time that Burns would celebrate and some plans and arrangements were being made to that effect. We argued the point with some of the leading men there that, as Pine Bluffs was planning a...

    Mark Watson|Jun 18, 2015

This past week I spent a morning with Dr. Bob Harveson, University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center plant pathologist, touring field pea fields in the Alliance area. Dr. Harveson and I were looking for diseases in field peas. Dr. Harveson is concentrating on diseases in field peas this year to see what concerns may develop for field pea producers in our area. So far the only disease that has shown up in field pea production in our area is blight. I have spoken with numerous...

  • Fresh summer salad dressing

    Crabbie Abner|Jun 18, 2015

If you are beginning to reap the rewards of a home garden, or some especially fresh and tasty produce you have picked up at the local grocery store, or a farmer’s market, there is nothing like making an equally fresh dressing for salads or side dishes. With these claws of mine it’s pretty difficult to twist of the caps on store bought bottled dressing, besides the fact you don’t really know how long it’s been sitting in a warehouse before it finally gets to the grocery store shelves. There is also the matter of all of those ingredients you can...

A section of I-80 just east of the Burns-Carpenter Interchange was closed for about an hour Wednesday while bomb squad personnel investigated a suspected pipe bomb found beside the highway. A WYDOT maintenance worker found a section of galvanized pipe about 14 inches long with end caps sitting just off the pavement beside the westbound lanes of I-80 about one-half mile east of the interchange. He reported it to the Wyoming Highway Patrol at 11:44 a.m. Trooper Jeremy Beck responded, confirmed the device looked like a potential pipe bomb and requ...
