  • Boom: Happy Fourth of July

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jul 4, 2013

Boom; a deep, prolonged, resonant sound. A loud, sudden, explosive noise, as the discharge of a gun. That is what happens at a fireworks factory on an hourly basis. Just think if you could safely create a few booms for yourself. Interested? It is always a little scary and exciting for a child to take a tiny wire flashing white hot lava-looking sparks from an adult they love. But once in their hands, the sky is their canvas for neon paintings. Some of us have grown up. The thrill is gone from... Full story

  • Lessons learned in 'Classroom of our Mind'

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 4, 2013

Working as reporter has given me the opportunity to cover a great many things. When I was a cub reporter, I was pretty eager to cover everything. I do mean everything. While covering an inspirational speaker, I became enamored by one of his motivation/self realization techniques — spending 10 minutes each day in the “Classroom of our Mind.” Today, while driving across the Hi-Line of Montana, alone, I figured it was be a good time to do just that. Truth be told, I make it a point to turn off a...

    Senator John Barrasso|Jul 4, 2013

Regardless of what you’ve heard on the news, immigration reform is not the only thing the Senate worked on this month. The Senate Energy Committee just passed a bill to better manage forests and prepare for fires, and a bill that encourages helium production in Wyoming and raises revenue that will help partially restore Wyoming’s AML funding. We also introduced a bipartisan bill to repeal the broken renewable fuel standard that has driven up food and fuel costs for Wyoming families. Senate Pas...

  • Add some sparkle to your Fourth

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jul 4, 2013

Between the heat, the popping and family and friends visiting, by the time dusk settles in across your piece of independence, you might need a little sparkle to light up your evening. Sparkle cake has been around for a while and recipes for it have been passed from generation to generation. There are ladies in my church family that can make the best angel food cake. And it’s said if you can master that, you can do anything in life. No fear, my non-baking friends. This recipe can work with an a...

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Jul 4, 2013

Happy Fourth of July! May each burst of color in the sky remind you how great our country is. And think how odd it would be to eat fish and chips today instead of hot dogs and apple pie. The community center will be closed July 6 for the entire day to do the wedding celebration of Steven Johnson and his bride Amanda Langlois. Congratulations! Tim Malm’s book is out on the shelves of local libraries and book stores. What an inspiration he has been for so many. I quickly paged through it while w...

  • Experiencing God

Cynthia Shroyer, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jul 4, 2013

The story of Abraham taking his promised son Isaac up on the mountain to sacrifice him is one that has been taught in Sunday School classes since Sunday School classes had their beginnings. My education of the event came complete with flannel-graph depictions of the old guy putting his teenage son on an altar made of stone. Just at the right time (and before any of the kids in class had a heart attack thinking their parents might take similar action) the teacher produced the image of a ram caugh...

  • No-till notes - soil microbe testing

    Mark Watson|Jul 4, 2013

The first thing I want to tell you about soil microbe testing is that this type of testing is in its infancy. Dr. Ray Ward, founder of Ward Laboratories in Kearney, has just begun to explore this type of soil testing. It’s safe to say that Ray will be learning along with the producers who send in samples for this type of soil health testing. Approximately one month ago I sent Dr. Ward soil samples from a neighbor’s winter wheat/summer fallow cropping rotation, our continuous no-till dry lan...
