  • Youth walked away from danger

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 29, 2013

A white male, approximately 5’7” in height wearing a ball cap and clean shaven approached a 16-year-old boy in an alley in Pine Bluffs Tuesday evening about 10 p.m. The man asked the boy when school started and then asked the child to perform oral sex. The boy said no and walked away. He told his mother what happened. She called the police who immediately responded and put out a BOL (be on the lookout) for the man. Pine Bluffs Police Department chief Robin Clark said they responded imm...

  • 25 years ago right now, Yellowstone burned up

    Bill Sniffin, www.billsniffin.com|Aug 29, 2013

Is this hell? Or is it Yellowstone? That was my exact thought as I piloted a small, single engine airplane over the vast expanse of Yellowstone National Park in August of 1988, during the horrible fires that year. Flying with me on that day was the late Larry Hastings, one of the best pilots and instructors in Wyoming history. Also along and helping take photos was the late Mike McClure, a legend in his own right, as a premier photographer. Both men lived in Lander. We had been talking about mak...

  • The heartbeat of a winner

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 29, 2013

My youngest son asked me over breakfast earlier this week if Wyoming had a chance of winning Saturday against Nebraska. I said there is always a chance but Nebraska is just tougher than Wyoming. He asked why. As I explained Division I football programs, the money and all the little boys dreaming of playing for top 25 teams, I wondered if all that mattered. Was it possible for Wyoming to win against an unbeatable opponent? Possible, however, not probable. For the past couple of weeks, I have...

  • Cowboys drop in to a sea of red

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 29, 2013

I never would have thought living in Wyoming, being raised a Cornhusker, and having my oldest call University of Wyoming Alma Mater would have ever caused a dilemma on a college football game day. But it has, twice in two years. In 2011, many of our Nebraska family and friends ventured up 7,250 feet to see the Cowboys compete but ultimately lose to the dominant top 25 team. Fast forward two years later, when our quarterback has had some “seasoning,” and the Cowboys travel down close to sea lev... Full story

  • A battle for inches

    Submitted|Aug 29, 2013

Temperatures soared to over 100 degrees at the track forcing riders to take innovative steps to combat heat exhaustion. Matthews stored her helmet and race jersey in the ice chest prior to her races to get her body temp down a few degrees. Her dad said, “I have never seen her dig so deep and ride so hard to win a victory. She left everything on the track and I am very proud of her.” Matthews finished the day’s races in Mitchell, Neb., by winning both motos and collecting two more holes...

  • Albin News

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Aug 29, 2013

Well, all is quiet in our little home town. Children have returned to school, harvest is slowly wrapping up, and we are falling quietly into autumn. Soccer and volleyball registration forms should be in your students back packs this week. Contact the community center for more information. I know they are in need of coaches for soccer. Remember the community center offers memberships at reasonable rates when you miss swimming and getting the outdoor summer exercise. We are blessed with an indoor...

  • Banner News

    Barb Cross|Aug 29, 2013

Good morning Harrisburg, Banner County, neighbors near and far. I hope this beautiful weather is setting well with you. Some days have been too blasted hot, acts like August. This is the final week of that however, as we sneak right into September. I would like to wish some local ladies speedy recoveries from various minor accidents, major operations, and general health problems. All are good friends and we wish them well soon; Ruthie Brown, Sherry McKnight, Gwen Bayerl, and Wilma Post we are...

  • Bushnell News

    Jamie Carpenter|Aug 29, 2013

Hope you all have a great Labor Day weekend! I neglected to write up a summary of this month’s village meeting in last week’s news, so I’ll include it this week. The meeting was very well attended, with standing room only. Verne Hackbarth plans to start circulating a petition to get the proposed half-cent sales tax on this year’s ballot. Talk to him if you’re interested in helping get the word out. Mr. Calvert opposed the designation of his property as a nuisance. There was much debate ov...

  • Looking Back

    Aug 29, 2013

1 years ago We can’t see where the Union Pacific has made any progress toward placing a drain through the grade between town and the depot. Train No. 19 from the east at 1:44 p.m. will make Pine Bluffs a regular stop hereafter. This gives our citizens three trains westward. When one dish was passed, mamma said she just loved to eat of it, but that the food would not agree with her. Paxton said he liked bananas but he didn’t eat them. Then Jean, the five-year-old, said, “I love water...

  • No-till notes - dry land corn

    Mark Watson|Aug 29, 2013

In the last several articles I took a look at how soil microbe populations, forage crops, and grazing cattle on our irrigated field of corn have influenced our fertilizer management on this field. There definitely seems to be a correlation between improving soil health with forage crops following winter wheat and grazing cattle on these crops prior to planting our irrigated corn and nitrogen fertilizer requirements. We have lowered our nitrogen fertilizer in this field by 60 pounds per acre and...
