George Lloyd Butler, 88, of Pine Bluffs died September 1, 2019 in the comfort of his home. He was born July 10, 1931 in Kimball, NE. George was a war veteran, serving the US Navy and Army. He was a pilot and farmer, but most of all, a family man. After the service, George returned home where he married the love of his life, Darline Fritz. They shared 65 years together. The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) is once again offering toolkits to junior high school classrooms statewide in celebration of Earth Science Week Oct. 13–19. The American Geoscience Institute (AGI), which has held Earth Science Week every October since 1998, provides 50 complimentary toolkits to the WSGS to distribute to Wyoming teachers on a first come, first serve basis. This week I took down my hydroponic system in the greenhouse. No, it wasn't because of disappointment or failure or anything like that. I've learned all I could from that particular system and I had to remove it in order to begin building the permanent system. The Pine Bluffs volleyball team has been in season for 3 weeks. The girls had their first tournament 2 weeks ago in Douglas, and ended up being the champions of the tournament, they went 6-0. Taking part in the Veteran's History Project (VHP) this weekend was more than just an interview for me. In 2017 there was an estimated 47,220 veterans living in the state of Wyoming, of those only 267 have participated in the VHP. What this means for the state is that there are approximately 46,953 vets here that have not had their stories recorded. Volleyball is under way and last week the Lady Hornets had their chance show their stuff.. The Lady Hornets hosted the Lingle Volleyball on Thurdsday 5 Sept. and then traveled to Yuma, Colorado on the Sept 6 to play the Yuma team.. The Lady Hornets won the match with Lingle with a 3 to 2 victory. The match had to be decided with a tie breaker game. Coach Gilbert says, "The Lingle game was ugly. In their first home game the Burn's Broncs were able to put away the Wright Panthers on Friday with a final score of 32-6 even though the game was stopped in the 4th quarter due to lightning. Defense played well only giving up 138 total yards. Seniors Ben Banville and Tanner Wilson were also excellent defensively. The Pine Bluffs/Burns XC team had their first full team meet today in Gering, Nebraska--we are only missing a few runners that are facing some season-opening injuries. With 6 races and over 40 runners, we have a full day and lots of things to be happy about, but holy heck was it a scorcher today. The Five Rocks Amphitheater is a challenging course. Hills, trails, grass, switchbacks, a beautiful jaunt around the cemetery, more hills, and finally a grassy downhill to the finish--the grassy finish was like a supercharger for all the runners....
