  • A hearty breakfast with a youthful Dick Cheney

    Bill Sniffin, www.billsniffin.com|Sep 26, 2013

It is almost stunning to see how healthy Dick Cheney looks the first time you see him with his new heart. The former Vice-President, Defense Secretary, Wyoming Congressman and President Ford’s Chief of Staff was in Lander and stopped by the Fox News All-Stars for breakfast recently. He was in Lander competing in the One Shot Antelope Hunt as Gov. Matt Mead’s designated hunter. His greeter Dave Kellogg brought the former Veep by to have some coffee and meet and greet some of the locals. Seve...

  • Letter to the editor

When Democrats say you must vote for or against some idea of theirs or “the children will starve,” much like they did this past week regarding cuts to the food stamp bill, Democrats are using their time tested and very clever abuse of Western ethics… a strategy of Moral Extortion. Liberals want conscientious voters to think, “Well I must go along with Democrat/Liberal logic… I certainly couldn’t live with myself if I allow children to starve.” To even suggest that conservatives would harbor such intent is morally and...

  • Hornets stung with another loss

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 26, 2013

The Pine Bluffs Hornets took the field Friday night after working on fundamentals after their previous two losses. “We were not fundamentally sound up front and they took advantage of it,” explained coach Will Gray. Southeast came in looking for a win after losing their first two contests. But even though they had not posted a mark in the win column, the Hornets knew it wouldn’t be easy to outrun them. “We knew we had stop the run, and we didn’t accomplish that,” Gray said....

  • Lady Hornets raise money but fall in ranks

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 26, 2013

The Lady Hornets were without a key player on the court Thursday night. Andrea Baker received a kidney donation Sept. 12 and will be out the rest of the season. “Andrea Baker, our all-conference middle hitter, received a kidney transplant last Thursday in Denver and so we are looking to all of our girls to step up and fill that void,”explained coach Christina Nusbaum. But Kimball proved to be too much for the team to overcome. The Lady Hornets lost in three sets, 21-25, 12-25, 13-25....

  • Coming home for a win

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 26, 2013

Head coach Marv Mirich was questioned by cross country coach Cole Manlove at the Burns homecoming pep rally Friday afternoon on how he felt about the first home game that night against Big Horn. “Nervous,” said the perennial word-shy coach. Manlove went on to say that he had heard Mirich had the toilet paper removed from the visitors locker room. Mirich, although not claiming truth or responsibility to the statement said, “whatever helps us win.” And win they did, 34-19 against a very...

  • Winning at 'Godzilla'

    Dustin Lee and Cole Manlove|Sep 26, 2013

The Pine Bluffs/Burns cross country team took a Friday off and ran Saturday instead at the Jackalope Invite in Douglas. The girls Jr. High race started at 12:00 and boys Jr. High race followed. For the boys Tristen Zitek placed 6th and Tyler Norris placed 8th. Both had great races considering the heat and difficulty of the course. On the girls side of things it was a great day. The new course has earned the nickname of “Godzilla” from our team because it has some monstrous hills. That didn’t deter them from running a great race. Austin...

  • Coyotes come home wounded

    Dorothy Timm|Sep 26, 2013

The Pawnee Coyotes wandered from their home field for a non conference match-up in Woodlin against Arickaree and brought home a loss and a wounded team member. “We got beat handily by a fast and aggressive Arickaree team 12-54,” coach Doug Miller sighed. “It was never really a ball game. It’s definitely not lack of effort. Everyone is playing hard; we’re just young, small and not real speedy.” The team played hard but Arickaree had too much speed for the young Coyotes. More painful than the loss was Sage Smock re-injuring his...

    Dorothy Timm|Sep 26, 2013

The Pawnee Lady Coyote traveled to play Woodlin/Arickaree on Friday. The Lady Coyotes won 25-14, 25-15, 25-8. Coach Marcy Konig said, “The Coyotes made a change in their rotation that has really been working. Afton Zitek had an amazing night serving 13 in a row.” Zitek continued to serve bullet after bullet which added another 6 aces to the scoreboard. • Banner News

    Barb Cross|Sep 26, 2013

News, Notes, and Nonsense Hello Banner County, neighbors and friends. Great weather for ducks, isn’t it? My sympathies go out to everyone who is still trying hard to get wheat planted, beans in, and corn soon to follow. This weather has been pretty unusual for this time of year and I heard on the news that they have the first snow in the mountains up around Denver. I still have green tomatoes and pumpkins too! Still mowing the lawn, and until this past weekend have been watering. Did any of yo...

  • No-Till Notes "Excellent Opportunity"

    Mark Watson|Sep 26, 2013

Last week I had the opportunity to do something that I hadn’t done in 36 years. I walked into a college classroom. I have to admit that it felt like old times watching the students enter the classroom in varying degrees of anticipated learning. Some had just gotten out of bed, some were going through the motions, and others were eagerly awaiting an opportunity to learn. I felt right at home with them and could relate to all their levels of the college experience as I had walked in all... Full story

  • Looking Back

    Sep 26, 2013

100 years ago A wonderful bit of modern surgery, said to be without a parallel, was performed by Dr. W.M. Lawrence, Jr., surgeon of the Overlook hospital at Summit, N.J., on Charles P. Walters, whose arm was caught in the cogs of a press and the flesh ripped from elbow to wrist. Dr. Lawrence decided on a desperate experiment in an effort to save the man’s arm. The abdomen was the only place with flesh enough to supply that torn from the arm, and an incision was made there and the arm laid...
