Cynthia Shroyer, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 24, 2013

An article written by former Pine Bluffs Post reporter Elaina Ilminen took second place in in-depth reporting at last week’s Wyoming Press Association convention. Wyoming is no stranger to wind, and I-80 experienced mother nature wanting to say “hay”. State Patrol slowed traffic to one lane on west bound I-80 last week to clear up the mess....

  • Wyoming fuel tax increase is necessary

    John Eklund|Jan 24, 2013

Dear Neighbors, As most of you know, the Wyoming State Legislature is in session and we have some difficult issues. The House has just passed on third reading the 10 cent increase in fuel tax. I was an “aye” vote, which, considering my usual conservative stance on taxes may surprise you. I think it’s fair to say that the tax appeared to have an equal amount of support as well as opposition, especially the Ag groups, they were anywhere from adamantly in favor to likewise opposed to divided... Full story

  • Derailing a superintendent

    Randy Tucker, The Riverton Ranger|Jan 24, 2013

The move to usurp the voice of the voters goes too far. It’s been an unprecedented two weeks to open the 2013 session of the Wyoming Senate. While personal disputes are commonplace in politics, this session took the personal vendetta to a new level with State Superintendent of Public Instruction Cindy Hill bearing the brunt of a grudge held by a few — a very few — state legislators. As I’ve reported this situation, every legislator I spoken with or who has replied to e-mails has indicated that the issue primarily is personal, not...

  • Inauguration of forgiveness and hypocrisy

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 24, 2013

I like to ride my bicycle. (reminds me of an 80’s tune ...) And sometimes, once a year, I will ride 150 miles in two days in the MS 150 Ride. I am slow. Often bugs on the road pass me when I try to peddle up hill. I keep peddling on. And I finish each mile, on my own without any enhancements other than a great play list and butt crème. But I don’t win, nor do I guess I want to. It must take more effort than I am willing to give to win races riding a bike. So much so, that a champion rider...

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 24, 2013

Pine Bluffs Council reviewed four bids from contractors for the City Park Project Monday night at its meeting. Scott Larson from Benchmark Industries gave the council a spreadsheet to review with all the necessary information from the four bids. “Reiman Corporation came in with the lowest bid,” said Larson. He added Reiman had made a mistake on the quote for asphalt re-patch, but they would honor the bid they made. Larson explained to the council once they accept the bid, Reiman will have 15...

  • Another law officer leaves Pine Bluffs

    Charlene Smith|Jan 24, 2013

During executive session at the Pine Bluffs Council meeting Monday evening, the council accepted Jake Johnson’s resignation from the police department. Within the last six months, the department had a chief resign and a new one take the lead. Pine Bluffs also gained a newly trained police officer. The void will be felt by the department, but retired police chief Don Taylor had volunteered his assistance “if needed.” Town administrator Caryn Miller said Johnson was hoping to work in a... Full story

  • Student of the Week

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 24, 2013

Albin Elementary: Mandie Amend is the go-to student in the sixth grade room for help, especially in math. “They usually ask me for help because I am the smartest one, I guess,” said Mandie in a shy, unassuming way. These early experiences with helping students learn has put a teaching career high on Mandie’s list of dreams. “I also like animals, too, so a veterinarian would be nice,” added Mandie. According to her teachers, treating others with respect is easy for Mandie. Sixth grade...

Cynthia Shroyer, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 24, 2013

The Hornets’ Nest was the scene of the latest meeting of Pine Bluffs Hornets and Burns Broncs. The inter-district rivals kept it a tight game in the first half, with the Hornets hitting some free throws in the third quarter to pull away for a 56-50 victory. “I thought the kids did a great job fighting through adversity during the entire,” Hornets’ head coach Will Gray said. “Kudos to Coach Patterson and his staff of players, they always play hard and physical.” The first period...

Cynthia Shroyer, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 24, 2013

Pawnee Lady Coyotes traveled to Prairie Friday, and kept their perfect record of 8-0 with a 48-39 win. The first half didn’t look promising to keep their winning way going and had the fans nervous. Adjustments were made, defensive effort increased and the Lady Coyotes found the net again. “We were getting killed and they were beating the heck out of us as we were down 13-27 at half time,” coach Dean Smock said. “Once we got our defense going and made some easy baskets we led by one at...

Cynthia Shroyer, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 24, 2013

The Prairie Mustangs ran over the Pawnee Coyotes Friday night, sending the visiting Coyotes home with a 58-69 losss. “We played hard, but did not shoot well tonigh,” Pawnee coach Tim Brunelle said. “We missed 13 free throws and shot a low percentage from the field as well. Brunelle said Prairie played very well, and gave his squad trouble with four Mustangs scoring in double figures.   “We just have to keep working on getting better in all phases of the game, and I think when the shots...

  • ‘If I don’t catch a fish soon, I am going to start cheating’

    Bill Sniffin, www.billsniffin.com|Jan 24, 2013

“Seems I am enduring the horrible life that living in a blue state can portend I’ve noticed that whenever you do an “I love Whyoming” column, you take a cheap shot at other parts of the country, mostly my home state. Why is Whyoming the least populated state? Maybe nobody wants to live there.” — Jim Sniffin, my grumpy little brother, of Cedar Falls, Iowa (which is a wonderful place in which to live, I’ve been told). My relatives and friends from other states are sick of me...

  • Lights, camera, action! It’s a wrap!

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 24, 2013

It seems everything can be dressed up in its’ Sunday best to be served on Super Bowl Sunday, for Oscar night or even to that special someone in their lunch pail. The sandwich is not to be left out. And in this season of watching not only the two best football teams compete and the best actors vie for gold, we tend to also watch the calories that nominate themselves for consumption. If you have put any effort into healthy eating, you already know some completely innocent looking foods can turn... Full story

The residents and rabbits have ventured out again from their warm abodes. The sun has been shining and has started to melt the now dirt-black snow. But, don’t fertilize the lawn yet, we still have a lot of freezing to do. Two Albin community members worked on a beautiful quilt. • Looking Back

    Jan 24, 2013

100 years ago On Wednesday the house passed its first bill, the emergency appropriations measure carrying $60,000. The bill was put through under suspension of the rules and by unanimous consent. Eleven bills and one joint resolution were introduced and referred to committees, there being a marked progressive flavor to the legislation which they propose. The following are some of the common dishes which we like to know how to prepare well. When a piece of round steak seems to be hopeless, use the edge of a saucer and pound it until well cut,...
