  • Local Veterans honored at area school events

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Nov 15, 2012

Pine Bluffs kicked off the 93rd commemoration of Veteran’s Day with a ceremony at the gymnasium Friday afternoon. The bands and choirs paid tribute to America and her military, and entertained local veterans who were honored guests in the packed gym. A video tribute brought many tears to the eyes as scenes from different wars and the families left behind splashed on the screen to the music of “Some Gave All”, “American Soldier”, and the 9-11 dedicated song “Sky scrapper”. Austin Asay expresse...

  • It’s no party for the Republican Party

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 15, 2012

The elections are over. It almost sounds like a death statement. “Doctor, we have no pulse. Election is dead.” This political season was a rough one. Granted we here in Wyoming didn’t get all the trash talking that those in battleground states got, but we did get our fair share. I wondered for a bit why it was we didn’t get the attack ads when it dawned on me, Wyoming is so Red, there is no point in trying. Sure, the Democrats have to throw a few ads at us to give the appearance that they haven’t forgotten about us, but they saw the writing o...

  • Scoot over to a new seat

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Nov 15, 2012

Someone was sitting in our pew on Sunday. Just one man in a pew all to himself. Blaming life and lack of sleep, we haven’t been using our pew much in the past months. It’s good to know someone else is polishing the wood and it doesn’t go cold from lack of use. It might be a Lutheran thing, but I feel almost “entitled” to my seat at our small church. Not really assigned but it feels odd to sit somewhere else. I suppose we could have said hi, and asked him to scoot over. The poor guy probably...

  • Bullying does hurt

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Nov 15, 2012

In every childhood, at some point, every child is going to feel left out, not included in a game. And as a child trying to fit into the world of their peers, exclusion hurts. It is almost impossible to go through childhood without being hurt by other children in some way. But bullying is far beyond having a one-time hurt thrown at you or being left out of a game. In the past few years, bullying has rocketed to the top of parent and school staff radar of dangerous and toxic issues. It is a topic...

  • Student of the Week: David Gordon Carpenter Elementary

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Nov 15, 2012

David Gordon is a fifth grader at Carpenter Elementary School, but has already formed a solid work ethic for life and receives much respect from his peers and teachers which he in turn gives back to them. “David is a great model of a Carpenter Coyote’s work ethic,” said Laurie Bahl, Carpenter principal. That is why she named David student of the week. “We just love David,” smiled Craig Williams, Carpenter fifth grade teacher. Williams added David is very active with his family on the farm and...

They celebrated Veteran’s Day at the Hereford Community Church and veterans were honored. For the special Roger Copeland read a story about WWII veteran Eddie Rickenbacker. The scripture for the day was Proverbs 14:34 “Righteousness exalteth a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people.” Pastor Opdycke also gave the story of King Hezekiah from 2 Kings Chapter 20. How does this relate to America? America has been a great nation blessed by God because America has been a Christian nation and h...

  • No-till notes — harvest

    Mark Watson, Panhandle no-till educator|Nov 15, 2012

I’d like to revisit last week’s article on the wind erosion on our farm. I’ve had plenty of time to think about my management decisions that caused the problem in the first place. I’ve had plenty of time to survey the situation and contemplate as I am stripping these fields with a chisel plow that we adapted to rough up the soil surface without damaging the wheat too extensively. We actually have a good stand of wheat despite my poor management thanks to a timely snow and rain which supplie...

  • Burns News

Sharon Stacy or Janet from the Burns Library, Burns Branch Library|Nov 15, 2012

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the Burns Branch Library! In 1620, a group of pilgrims sailed from Europe to the United States, on a ship called the Mayflower. The pilgrims settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It was winter when the pilgrims first arrived and nearly half of them died that first year. Two Wampanoag Indians names Squanto and Samoset helped the pilgrims by teaching them how to farm the land and build their homes. That next fall, the pilgrims had food to eat and homes to live in. The pilgrims invited the Indians to eat with...

The village board met last Thursday. They changed the format of the meeting a bit to streamline the order of business and make it more efficient. Dave Hottell from the county roads department was there to discuss the county/village interlocal agreement. Everyone agreed that the agreement should be updated since it was last done in 1998. The current agreement basically states that the village can have use of county equipment as long as the equipment is operated by a county employee (for insurance...

  • Tater Tots; more than just cattle feed

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Nov 15, 2012

Every good story usually has a once upon a time and a happy ending. This one is no different and the ending is one your stomach and those of the ones you dine with will love to tell again and again. It all started in 1954, with Idaho native Neef and brother, Golden Grigg founded the Ore-Ida company. The company was named because it sits on the Oregon-Idaho border, hence Ore-Ida. Pretty nifty how that worked out. The brothers Grigg were trying to perfect a way to make frozen french fries. But...

Over 40 ladies took a seat in the Pine Bluffs Senior Center lunch room for a candy class Thursday. And what a sweet seat it was as Shelia Vella taught about some tips on making candy. Vella moved quickly and easily through chocolate dipping and the easy processes of many sugary concoctions. Vella even showed the class how to make peanut brittle in the microwave. “It tasted really good and broke apart great,” said Alicia Burry, center assistant. “You would never know it was made in the micro...

  • Lost hours should be saved for later

Charlene Smith, Reporter for Pine Bluffs Post|Nov 15, 2012

The time change came later this year. A few years back, someone who gets paid to make decisions that change our lives decided it would fit better the first weekend in November. Arizona and Hawaii still think it doesn’t fit anywhere, so they stay on standard time all through the year. On November 4th, we turned our clocks back one hour, losing an hour each day. The simple reason for Daylight Savings Time is to take advantage of the daylight (sunlight) hours. For many people that work outside, thi...
