  • Really, Dad?

    Polly Taylor|Dec 10, 2015

On Monday, Nov. 30, Pine Bluffs officially ushered in the beginning of the Christmas season, as well as the jolly old elf in red himself, Santa Claus. He listened to childhood wishes for toys, and also met some of the newest recipients of his generosity, like the youngster pictured who appeared to be looking at his parents and saying, "Really? Help me out here. Now what do I do?"...

  • Texas Trail Market posts fiscal loss

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

As large regional and national retailers lower prices to entice patrons into their establishments, local smaller shops are struggling to maintain their market share. Such is the case of Texas Trail Market, who posted a $36,786 net loss during the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. "I know it looks bad but we're still in good shape," said General Manager Bill Cushing as he addressed the annual meeting of co-op members Tuesday night at the Pine Bluffs Community Center. "We're doing well even though we...

  • Winter has been spotty this year with closures and high winds

    Bill Sniffin|Dec 10, 2015

Grrrr and Brrrr. I am sitting in my office in Lander staring out at a foot of snow and cold temperatures and unpleasant thoughts are going through my head. Whew, it is time to take a deep breath. Let’s re-examine and rethink this situation. Winter, what winter? The winter of 2015 has been pretty darned easy so far. For example, Wyoming just enjoyed the most spectacular 45-day October and first half of November in its history. It would have been impossible for the state to have any better...

  • Just a Few Thoughts...about Chanukah

    Polly Taylor|Dec 10, 2015

The other day I was listening to North Pole radio, and I heard the individual who was pretending to be Santa Claus say “Happy Kwanzaa” and “Happy Chanukah” and then proceed to announce that those were just other ways to say “Merry Christmas”. Ummmm…no they are not. Kwanzaa has nothing to do with Christmas, and has only been in existence for a few years. It gives African-Americans a way to celebrate their culture and food, and it just happens to be celebrated during the period...

  • From the Kitchen of Crabbie Abner

    Dec 10, 2015

Being an east coast crab, I’ve not only enjoyed my fair share of Amish food, but I’ve also had the opportunity to sample treats related to the Jewish. I went to school with kids of the Jewish faith, and attended a number of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and they do like their sweets. Chanukah celebration food, though, centers around the fried variety, which I love but don’t eat too often. The oil the food is fried in is representative of the oil used during the rededication ceremony of a desecrated temple that was won back. The Jews did not have...

    Polly Taylor|Dec 10, 2015

Many of the children who visited Santa during the Christmas at Home festivities were not in a hurry to meet the big guy in red, Santa Claus, like the young lady pictured above. But with a little coaxing from her dad, as well as Santa, she was all smiles, and didn't want her visit to end....

  • Banner County News

    Barb Cross|Dec 10, 2015

Good morning Banner County!! I hope everyone has been enjoying this nice spring weather. According to the weather forecast it is about to cool off again, at least for awhile. This whole year has been a roller coaster ride. Guess we will just set back and enjoy it. I saw a bumper sticker once that said “Sit down, shut up, and hold on!” Kind of how it is. The Central-Banner County 4-H Club did just that this past Sunday while they went Christmas caroling around Harrisburg. Dave and Kim Hansen...

  • Albin News

    Charlene Smith|Dec 10, 2015

If you do not live in Wyoming, you may lose your patience when you drive to the store or to school or to work with us. Unless we live in Cheyenne, and the city limits are a little long reaching themselves, we drive and we drive and we drive, drive, drive. This doesn’t seem odd to us. We grab water bottles on the way out the door. The kids grab books or electronics or pillows. Our trunks and back seats look more like a family room than a passenger area. It wasn’t until my mom came out for a...

100 Years Ago December 16, 1915 School house will be fixed at once Board takes prompt action The defect in our public school building here which was mentioned in last week’s issue will receive prompt attention by our school board. Wm. Dunstan, one of the efficient members of the board, was in town Tuesday and took the matter up at once. Upon investigation it was found that the waste water from the drinking fountain was causing the trouble on account of a poor drainage system. Mr. Dunstan contracted with Harrison Huntwork to put in a proper...

  • No Till Notes: Power of Legumes, Part 4

    Mark Watson|Dec 10, 2015

Last week I visited about the results of the biological tests we ran on our winter wheat stubble which showed very low microbial activity. The winter wheat sample had a total microbial biomass number of only 1,248.84. This low result would be expected since there is not much actively growing in the field and the residue is a high carbon-low nitrogen type residue. This high carbon-low nitrogen type residue explains why winter wheat residue is valuable in our region as the residue is hard to...

  • Hornets look forward to solid season on the court

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

After posting a 22-2 record and finishing third at state last season, the Pine Bluffs Hornets are not dwelling on the past and are only focused on having the best 2015-16 season they can put together. “For us, we are only concerned about this season,” said Coach Will Gray. “Last year, the kids did a great job competing but the season didn’t end the way we wanted it to. Last year is in the past and we know a new season will bring new challenges thrown at us. We are excited to face those challenges and compete each and every night....

  • WGFD invites high school students to enter Conservation Stamp art contest

    Wyoming Game and Fish Dept.|Dec 10, 2015

Wyoming high school artists interested in Wyoming’s wildlife are alerted that beginning Jan. 1, 2016 the Wyoming Game and Fish Department will begin accepting artwork for the 2017 Wyoming Conservation Stamp Art Contest. Each year Game and Fish selects one species to be the subject of the competition. The winning entry will appear on the following year’s printed conservation stamps – thus the competition for the 2017 stamp. The contest has traditionally been for professional artists. This year, to encourage interest in wildlife and the...

  • Lady Hornets look to build on last season

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

Going into her fourth season as Lady Hornets head coach, Lindsey Forbes knows there are challenges ahead for her squad. But, she feels if the team can stay focused and play the fundamentals, the Lady Hornets will have another productive year on the hardwood. “We have a strong group of upperclassmen who will build on last season and lead our freshmen and sophomores,” said Forbes. “Last year we were 17-5, but we had a disappointing finish and did not make the state tournament.” Forbes also said the opponents for the Lady Hornets will be...

  • Grapplers prepare to hit the mat

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

Coach Dan Clayson believes the Burns/Pine Bluffs wrestling team is shaping up well for the upcoming season. “I think it’s going to be an exciting year,” he said. “We got some experience back from last year. We have four returning state-placers, so we’ll be OK. Some of our kids have put in the work over the past few years, and they’re starting to see the results of that hard work.” Clayson added experience will be the core of the team’s performance for 2015-16. “We’ve got a good nucleus, and then we have a bunch of young...
