Students earn spots in county spelling bee

The Laramie County Spelling Bee is set to take place in Cheyenne on Feb. 13, and Laramie County School District No. 2 is busy preparing its entrants for the contest.

Two students from each of the four elementary schools and two junior high schools in LCSD2 will make the trek to Cheyenne for the bee. An alternate for each school has also been named.

Seventh grader Nora Vega and eighth grader Kaitlin Butler will represent Pine Bluffs Junior High. The alternate is Melissa Fornstrom, eight grade. Vega and Fornstrom reside in Pine Bluffs and Butler in Carpenter. Their coach is Allen Merrill.

Earning a slot from Burns Junior High are Rebecca Derner and Katie Norris. Derner and alternate Marley Bird are from Burns. Norris resides in Cheyenne. The trio are are in the eighth grade. Their coach is Justin Earnshaw.

Hayden Hancock and Hunter Bice, both in fifth grade, will represent Pine Bluffs elementary, with fourth grader Isaak Wu serving as alternate. All three students are from Pine Bluffs and their coach is Lisa Gilbert.

Three fifth grade students are on Albin elementary’s list of entrants. Brian Arzola and Carter Kirkbride will participate in the bee, with Gabe Childers taking the alternate slot. Arzola is from Albin, Kirkbride from Meriden, and Childers resides in Bushnell. There coach is Christina Nusbaum.

Sixth graders populate the list of local winners from Carpenter. Kaylee Shook of Carpenter and Brandon Keck of Burns will represent the school, with Gracie Forth of Carpenter serving as alternate. Their coach is Barbara Franzen.

At Burns elementary, Eileen Cushing is the coach of spellers Mercedes Bartles and Wyatt Ebben. Bartles is a sixth grade student from Burns. Ebben is a fifth grader from Carpenter. Their alternate is Spencer Bloomer, a sixth grader from Hillsdale.

The students will compete with other students from around Laramie County. Winners will advance to the state spelling bee, which will be held March 9 in Rock Springs.

Parents and others wishing to support LCSD2 spellers in their quest for the state bee may attend the Laramie County Spelling Bee, which will be held in the Centennial Room at Laramie County Community College. The bee will begin at 8:30 a.m.
