Burns girls win state, Wilcoxson takes first in four events

It was Burns High School’s year at the 2A state track and field meet, held last weekend in Casper. The Burns girls won the division with 98 points. Field event star Shana Wilcoxson finished her high school career by earning 40 of those points on her own when she took first place in all four of her events.

“The Burns girls had a great state meet,” said coach Brooks Hoffman. “Lovell is a very strong, well rounded team. They know how to compete at the state meet having won the title the past three years. Their girls set a new state record in the 3200 meter relay and Kim Shumway broke Burns alumni Jessica Fox’s 2A class record in the 400 meters.”

Hoffman said competing against a strong Lovell squad put pressure all of the Burns girls to go out and compete well.

“After projecting the team scores, we knew that it was going to come down to the wire for who was going to take the title,” Hoffman said. “The girls handled the pressure, competed well and really came together as a team. We were fortunate to have some luck and capitalize on the events that we could make up some ground. I am very proud of how the team performed. It is always what a coach wants to see, athletes hitting their best marks the last week of the season, on the largest venue.”

Lovell came in second, eight points behind Burns.

The Burns boys finished in 11th place with 30 points. Boys coach Cole Manlove said he was very happy with the results of the meet.

“All the girls came through and the boys had a strong showing,” Manlove said. “We look forward to next year!”

Here’s rundown from Hoffman of seniors girls who competed:

Shana Wilcoxson had a great meet, taking first place in all four events is an amazing way to end a senior year. She matched her personal record in the pole vault and improved her best mark in the triple jump by a half inch.

“I am excited to see where she will be competing next year at the collegiate level,” Hoffman said.

Jessica Phillippe had one of the few events were Burns and Lovell had similar times heading into the event.

“She had her season’s best time in the event and competed hard to get the points the team needed to maintain our lead,” Hoffman said.

“Maddie Cowles had a great 400 meter relay starting leg. The handoffs looked the best of the season and their finishing time proved that they were hungry to show what mark they could run when it all came together,” said Hoffman.

“It was great to see Megan (Smith) qualify for state, let alone place and bring home some points for the team,” said Hoffman. “Megan sat out the first half of the season with an injury, but was excited with the idea of getting back into competition in the sprints and pole vault for regionals and was close to making finals in the 100 meters.”

Senior Colton Wright placed 6th in the 100m and was the second leg of the seventh place 4x100 relay team. He also tied for 10th in the high jump with Pine Bluffs senior Lane Nusbaum.
