Student of the week:Piper Perez

A confident but quiet Burns sixth grader is in the spotlight for the student of the week. Not for her confidence, but for the work and dedication that gave it to her.

Piper Perez, daughter of Kenny and Lisa Perez, and older sister to Peyton, is a reader. So often is the case when the spotlight shines on a smart and well-educated child, it is books that are found center stage.

"I like adventure series," Piper said as a small excited smile escapes her usually mellow face. "I was reading 'The Wolves of Beyond' and 'The Elijah Project,' but I am done with both of those."

And Piper doesn't keep the love of reading to herself. She is "training" her little sister to be a reader as well.

"Peyton is turning into a better reader since I have been teaching her how," Piper said. "If someone is not doing well, I would just tell them to keep trying."

Piper likes getting off the bus every school day and "seeing everyone so happy and enjoying the fresh air," and "starting a new day."

When Piper finds her way out of her books, she can be found playing volleyball or basketball. She also enjoys math.

But reading is her favorite. And she is passing that love on to her family and friends. Because of that sense of sharing and her hard work and dedication, we have selected Piper Perez as our student of the week.
