Pine Bluffs Hornet Preston Thurin takes a leap in the long jump event Saturday in the Bayard Invite.

The Lady Hornets' performance in the Brayden Invitational track and field meet Saturday was a pleasant surprise for Coach Dustin Lee after the team placed fourth overall out of 19 teams.

"That's the highest ranking that any of my teams have gotten at that meet in the past six years at least," Lee said.

The Lady Hornets' success in this particular meet was especially impressive, given the vast size of the meet, Lee said.

"That was the largest that meet has ever been," he said. "And it is always very competitive just because of the sheer numbers."

Lady Hornet Sam Hanson pre-qualified for state competition, and performed her personal best in the long jump, after landing a 15-04.50 jump. Hanson took fifth place in the event. Austin Asay also performed well Saturday, placing first in the 3200 meter run event. Other top performers were

Hanson, Jadyn Golding, Andrea Baker and Montanna Chrystal in the 4x100 meter relay. The team placed third in the event and pre-qualified for state with a time of 53.90.

Lee said he expected a fast time from the team, but their performance exceeded his expectations.

"They ran a very fast time, sooner than I thought they would," he said.

Lee said he hopes the Lady Hornets can keep up the high performance as they move throgh the season, one week at a time.

"Our girls just outperformed the best, and that is good for the beginning of the season," he said.

Lee said he was also impressed with the Hornets' performance at the Bayard meet, but expected them to place in the Top 10. Instead, the boys placed in the Top 12.

The next track meet is the Tri-State Invitational scheduled for Friday in Chappell, Neb.
