Fresh Water Flavors

 


We are now more than halfway through summer, so there are not a lot of weekends left before the kids are back in school, and the cooler autumn weather sets in. That means there are still a few weeks left to take advantage of all of the fresh fruits and vegetables available now, because you won’t be able to find them in a month or two.

One of the things that is really popular right now are waters flavored with fruits and herbs, and they are mighty tasty…kind of like those fresh toes we crabs like to latch onto at the beach.

Making fruited ice cubes is another way of enjoying the fruit of the season. So, I’m going to share some combinations that are going to quench your thirst in a healthy way. When you add whole herbs as garnish to these tricked out waters and ice cubes, even the kids will feel like they’re getting away with drinking an ‘adult beverage’.

Speaking of adult beverages, mosquitos, nature’s own little phlebotomists, love it when you drink beverages containing alcohol because they love alcohol as well. So drinking beverages like these fruited waters are a better choice, and you might find out that the mosquitos won’t be in such a hurry to take a blood sample from you.


Tricked Out Water

Fill a pitcher with six cups of water, add one of the following flavor combinations, and chill well before you sip. It will take at least an hour for the flavors to infuse the water, and the longer they steep the stronger the flavor will be.

Strawberry & Basil

1 Pint Fresh Strawberries, sliced

A large handful of Basil, try Sweet, Lemon or Cinnamon

Watermelon & Ginger

2 Cups Seedless Watermelon, chopped

1 3-inch piece Ginger, peeled and sliced in thin strips

Pink Grapefruit & Tarragon

1 Pink Grapefruit, cut into wedges

4 Springs Tarragon

Cool Ice Cubes

When making these ice cubes, use club soda, regular or the sodium free kind, to give your water a little boost. They will leave you with a glass of water that is anything but boring.

Minted Melon Using a melon baller, drop one or two honeydew melon balls into each cube of an ice tray. Drop whole or cut mint leaves into each cube. Fill tray with water or club soda, and squeeze one-half of a lime over the cubes. Freeze overnight.

Hibiscus Raspberry

Brew Hibiscus tea and let cool completely. Drop a few raspberries into each cube of an ice cube tray, then fill with the cooled tea and freeze overnight.

Frozen Fruit

If you really want to pump up the volume on your summer beverages, instead of ice cubes just freeze chunks of fresh fruit. Use the fruit of your choice, and prepare it by washing thoroughly, cutting into bite size chunks, and put them on a parchment lined pan. Place in the freezer for at least an hour, or until the fruit is frozen.


Pineapples, strawberries, blueberries, or just about any kind of berry, mango, peaches, nectarines, and many other fruits work well this way.
