Serving all of Eastern Laramie County since 1908

42nd annual Ed Dulaney Canoe Derby this weekend

The 42nd annual Ed Dulaney Canoe Derby will be held Sept. 11 thru 13 at the Bridgeport State Recreation Area. Founded in 1974 by the late Ed Dulaney, a scoutmaster from Gering, Ne., the derby is now one of the longest running scouting events of its kind in the nation. The derby involves Boy Scouts, Weblos and Cub Scouts from Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado.

John Zerck, a scoutmaster from Alliance, Ne., will serve as chairman, assisted by Dick Ross of Gering.

Novice and advanced level teams will compete in a canoeing obstacle course Saturday morning. Paper boat races will start around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, featuring boats made entirely of paper products designed and built by scouts working in pairs. There will also be cooking and campsite competitions.

Registration begins the afternoon of Sept. 11, with scouts camping for the weekend. The public is welcome to attend Derby events, and every car needs a park permit.
