Coyotes end regular season with a pair of losses

The Pawnee Coyotes suffered a pair of non-conference losses last week to end the regular season at 5-14.

Last Thursday, the boys were off to Anton, Colo. to play Arikaree/Woodlin, coming away with a 67-39 loss.

Pawnee stayed within reach in the first half, trailing 13-11 in the first and 26-21 at the break.

A/W pulled ahead in the third, outscoring the Coyotes 19-7 to take a 45-28 lead into the final quarter.

Pawnee was doubled up in the fourth, 22-11 and went home with a 67-39 loss.

"We played a very competitive first half, came out and really struggled in the third quarter,” said head coach Tim Brunnell. “We had too many turnovers and missed shots to stay close tonight."

Junior Bryce Schnug led the Coyotes with 20 points, with Luke Duggan scoring seven, Drew Ellis with four, Jade Cass with three, Wyatt Schnug and Miguel Moreno each with two and Josh Keiper with one.

Last Saturday, the Coyotes traveled to Iliff to face-off against the Caliche Buffaloes. Despite an early lead, Pawnee fell 69-52.

The Coyotes held a slim 20-19 at the end of the first quarter, but the Buffaloes charged ahead in the second, outscoring Pawnee 17-6 to take a 36-26 lead into the break.

The Buffaloes padded their lead in the third, scoring 20 points to Pawnee's 13 to widen their margin, 56-39.

In the final frame, both teams scored 13 points as Caliche got the win at home, 69-52.

"We played a good first quarter, struggled to score much in the second quarter, but played a decent second half,” added Coach Brunnell. “It was a much better game for us than Thursday's game.  When we click together as a team, we are pretty good, we just need to sustain that throughout the game and not have those dry spells where we don't score and the opponents get rolling.”

Leading Pawnee in scoring was Bryce Schnug with 25 points, followed by seven points by Jade Cass, six by Luke Duggan, five by Owen Wahlert, four by Drew Ellis, three by Miguel Moreno and two by Wyatt Schnug.

The Coyotes faced Weldon Valley on Wednesday in the first round of district play. Look for results of that contest next week as the game had not yet been played at press time.
