School board discusses July hail damage in Burns and Pine

Despite suffering severe damage during last month’s hailstorm, schools in Pine Bluffs are expected to open on time. Officials also said the storm provided a chance to review emergency management policies.

“It is a chance to step back and reflect,” LCSD2 Superintendent Jon Abrams said during Monday’s meeting.

Facilities Director Kim Nelson said to expect to replace every roof on every school building in Pine Bluffs and that every vehicle was totaled in the July 27 storm.

Monetary damages have not yet been assessed, but insurance adjusters are in Pine this week to determine that.

Despite several broken windows at the Historic High School in Pine Bluffs, which Pine Bluffs Elementary will utilize this school year while a new building is constructed, Abrams said the building

will be ready for students by the start of the school year.

“It’s going to be ready. It’s going to be tight.

“We’re going to have to get creative,” Abrams said, adding, “One or two of the rooms have minimal window breakage.”

Abrams also addressed board members’ safety concerns and said classrooms with broken windows should be cleaned up prior to the August 22 back-to-school date.

Nelson said efforts from school staff, volunteers and the Wyoming National Guard helped with cleanup efforts in Pine Bluffs.

“It was a long day, but it was short what of what could have been disastrous work,” Nelson said.

“I was shocked at that, almost,” Nelson said.

Unfortunately, however, insurance will not cover the lost trees and other landscaping damage to the schools in Pine Bluffs.

Insurance adjusters were also in Burns to inspect school facilities from a July 14 hailstorm. While the buildings were not damaged to the extent of buildings in Pine Bluffs, minor repairs will have to be made.
