Fornstrom attends conference in Indianapolis

Pine Bluffs senior Melissa Fornstrom puts the "I" in Indy during a recent trip to Indianapolis for the National Student Leadership Conference sponsored by the High School Athletic Associations.

Melissa Fornstrom, Pine Bluffs High School senior, recently attended the National Student Leadership Conference in Indianapolis sponsored by the High School Athletic Associations. Melissa is serving her second year of a two year term on the Wyoming High School Activities Association Student Advisory Council. Students from twenty-seven states including Hawaii, and also students from Canada attended the conference.

Melissa joined fellow council members Macie Hayes of Douglas, Danielle Mitchelson of Farson, and Commissioner Ron Laird and Mrs. Laird to make the trip.

Upon arrival in Indianapolis, the group toured the city. Points of interest were the Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Colts. They saw the Indiana State Capitol building, and shopped at Monument Circle, an interesting one of a kind shopping center.

A training session was held the first evening, all sessions focused on being a better leader. Three sessions were held the second day. Melissa especially enjoyed the Unified Sports sessions in which students from the Special Olympics joined the visiting group for participation in games. A local high school basketball team came to the session to help with training for the students involved in the Special Olympics.

Melissa found it very interesting that a large number of students she met thought that students in Wyoming still ride horses to school. Many were surprised that her classes consisted of only 20-30 students, many of theirs had 400 or more. They also found it hard to believe that our teams often had to ride 300 miles or more to take part in sports events. Most of them regarded 45 miles a long trip.

Melissa found the trip educational and a lot of fun. She encourages anyone who may have the opportunity to participate to do so.

She is the daughter of Stu and Katt Fornstrom of Pine Bluffs.
