Martin earns WHSAA Sportsmanship Award

Sophomore Willow Martin was recognized recently by both the Wyoming High School Activities Association and the Laramie County School District No. 2 for her sportsmanship.

Martin was recognized by her sportsmanship that was shown during the Lady Broncs versus Lingle – Ft. Laramie volleyball match Sept. 30, 2016.

According to the WHSSA press release, Martin had exemplary conduct and good sportsmanship throughout the match. “She played hard and was encouraging to her teammates by helping them up and slapping hands at the end of each play.”

Those nominating Martin of the award included Debby Followell and Robin Schainost of the Cheyenne Volleyball Official’s Association. “I liked that she always had a smile on her face. She also was respect to the officials.”

LCSD NO. 2 Superintendent Jon Abrams brought Martin’s achievement to the board’s attention at the LCSD No. 2 board meeting Oct. 10. “When we have a young lady as we do in this case receive recognition in the state, I feel it’s important to have the opportunity to be recognized here as well.” The board gave congratulatory remarks to Martin after the press release was read by Burns High School Principal Bobbie Dishman.

WHSAA Commissioner Ron Laird explained that sportsmanship is a goal that all coaches and athletes should have as they participate in activities. “I am pleased to hear that your students and coaches understand the true meaning of participation. Please extend my appreciation and congratulations to Willow for joining the RIDE (Respect, Integrity, Dedication, Encouragement) by demonstrating respect, integrity, dedication and encouragement.”
