Two-vehicle accident on I-80 results in fatality

This 1993 Chevy Blazer driven by 24-year-old Columbus, Ohio resident Bryan Silverthorn was rear-ended by a 2016 Freightliner semi-truck driven by 45-year-old Rigby, Idaho resident Jaysen Thompson. One of Silverthorn's passengers, 24-year-old Kacie Ketchum of Helena, Montana, was not wearing her seat belt and sustained fatal injuries at the scene. The accident took place on westbound Interstate 80 at mile post 395, approximately five miles west of Pine Bluffs.

One person is dead following a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 five miles west of Pine Bluffs on Wednesday, December 14.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:25 p.m. when a 2016 Freightliner driven by Jaysen Thompson, 45, of Rigby, Idaho, rear-ended a 1993 Chevrolet Blazer driven by 24-year-old Columbus, Ohio resident Bryan Silverthorn.

One of Silverthorn's passengers, Kacie Ketchum, 24, of Helena, Montana, was not wearing her seat belt and suffering fatal injuries at the scene of the crash.

Another passenger in the Chevrolet Blazer, Kayla Lemmings, 24, of Billings, Montana, was wearing her seat belt, was transported by helicopter ambulance to a medical facility in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and has been hospitalized.

Silverthorn was wearing his seat belt, was transported by ground ambulance to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming and was hospitalized.

Thompson was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

Distracted driving and following too close are being investigated as contributing factors in this crash.

Thompson has been arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle. He has been booked into the Laramie County Detention Center in Cheyenne. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.

A crew from the Wyoming Department of Transportation diverted westbound I-80 traffic at Pine Bluffs onto Highway 30. Traffic was then able to access westbound I-80 at Egbert.

This marks the 111th highway fatality in Wyoming for 2016.

There were 144 fatalities during this same time period in 2015.
