CRMC to host free diabetes informantion event

Cheyenne, WY—Cheyenne Regional Medical Center invites community members interested in learning more about diabetes to attend its free “Diabetes Day” event on November 10, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held in the hospital’s main auditoriums, next to the cafeteria.

Included will be a brief awards ceremony at 9 a.m. to honor local residents with type 1 diabetes who have successfully managed the disease with insulin for 25 or more years. The ceremony is part of the Lilly Diabetes Journey Awards program sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company.

“The awards ceremony is new for this year,” said Melissa Stehwien, a certified diabetes educator and the coordinator of CRMC’s Diabetes Self-Management program. “We felt it was important to recognize those who are successfully managing their type 1 diabetes and to inspire and encourage others in the same situation, to know that they can also successfully manage and live with this disease.”

The awards ceremony will be followed at 10 a.m. by a presentation on diabetes and kidney disease by internal medicine physician Dr. A.J. Meares.

An update on diabetes medications will then be given at 11:15 a.m. by Deborah Hinnen, an advanced practice nurse and certified diabetes educator.

The event will include informational exhibits in addition to giveaways, light snacks and beverages.

“Type 2 diabetes has become much more prevalent in our community over the past several years,” Stehwien said. “Our goal with this event is to help our community understand the different types of diabetes and what can be done to manage this disease and sometimes, in the case of type 2 diabetes, even prevent it.”
