On Monday, July 8, 2019, the Wyoming National Guard along with the Wyoming Air National Guard held a community meeting to reach out to local employers to help them understand some of the demands made on some of their employees by the armed services.

This informal meeting was held in Cheyenne and was attended by several local employers and at least two employers from Colorado, including a sheriff's department representative. Wyoming Army National Guard Chief of Staff, Colonel Steve Alkire and Vice Commander of the Air National Guard, Colonel David Herder offered Information to help employers to work through the timelines involved in possible deployment as well as yearly and monthly commitments that their Guard employees will face. Alkire and Herder offered a realistic look at timelines where deployment is concerned as well as explaining the difference between how the Guard worked then and how it works now. So many employers think Guard service is only one weekend a month and two weeks a year, the new and improved Guard is always on alert, always ready, and can experience a much more demanding schedule than in the past.

Also on hand was Retired Brigadier General Kathy Wright representing the Employment Support Program (ESP). For service members who are looking for work or looking to change jobs, the ESP is available for services including: introduction to military friendly companies, career awareness, creating resumes, and developing social media profiles. Transitioning from a military career, deployment, or looking for new work can be a challenge for our veterans and active duty members, and the ESP offers services that will make that transition easier.

As the demands that reserve service make on our soldiers grow, the support that they will need from the civilian sector also grows.
