On July 4, 1867, the first tents were pitched on the site now known as Cheyenne, and 67 years later, lacking two months, on May 4, 1934, the U.S. Veterans Hospital of Cheyenne was opened and dedicated, 20 months after construction began. The facility capable of accommodating 100 patients, was built at a cost of approximately $750,000 which included the site, buildings, equipment and landscaping. At the dedication, bureau officials stated that the hospital , •will continue to be active for more than 50 years, at least.•
