Creating a new path... or changing horses in midstream

When I was a child I played Yatzee with my mother. Sometimes in my second roll I would change my mind as to what I was shooting for and my mother would inevitably say, "Never change horses in the middle of the stream." Now I am not sure if this is something she made up, or if it was one of those oldie but goodie cliches that she seemed to always have in her proverbial pocket, but her meaning was that I shouldn't stray from the path that I had already chosen. As I enter into what I would consider midlife, I am not only straying from the path... I have created an entirely new path.
