Bearcats win over Broncs

January 20, 2022

The Burns Broncs came home from Bridgeport to face the Douglas Bearcats in a non-conference game. The Broncs coming off the loss to Bridgeport wanted to make short work of the Bearcats and put a mark in the win column. The Bearcats had just won against the Cheyenne South team and wanted to keep the winning streak alive and take the Broncs to the stables. The Bearcats were a bit too strong both on offense and defense for the Broncs and won the contest 51-32.

The Broncs started off slow against the Bulldogs and only managed to put three points up for the quarter. Spencer Smith scoring the only points for the Broncs. However the Bearcats did not run away with it as the Broncs defense held them to only 10 points in the quarter. The second quarter showed both offenses coming alive. Spencer Smith hit a three-pointer and field goal for 5 while teammate Isaac Bloom hit a pair of field goals for the Broncs. The Broncs put 12 points up in the quarter. But the defense was still a bit sluggish and allowed the Bearcats 17 points. The Broncs headed into the half trailing the Bearcats by 12. Halftime score 27-15.

The second half was not bad but the Broncs just couldn’t seem to get it all together. The Broncs offense put up eight points. Isaac Bloom, Luke Lerwick, Kody Foley all dropped a field goal. But the defense allowed 14 points to be put up by the Bearcats. The last quarter was the closest of the four. The Broncs managed 9 points while the Bearcats hit for 10. Luke Lerwick sunk a three-pointer as did Spencer Smith. Caden David sunk a field goal and Bloom made a free throw. The final score 51-32.

Spencer Smith had the game high 11 points for the Broncs. Isaac Bloom hit for seven and Luke Lerwick dropped six. Jackson Kirkbride hit four of his own and Caden David and Kody Foley each sunk a field goal for two points each.

The Broncs next game is Saturday against the Buffalo Bison.
