Hornets stamp Longhorns

February 17, 2022

The Pine Bluffs boys varsity basketball team hosted the Kimball Longhorns last Tuesday evening. The Burns/Pine Bluffs indoor track team had their senior night between the junior varsity and varsity games. The first place Hornets outscored the Longhorns 74-32. The Longhorns gave the Hornets all they could handle. The Longhorns did not have the height that the Hornets had but they tried to compensate with speed and passing. It just was not enough for the Longhorns as they lost the game to the Hornets.

Stu Lerwick led the team this night when four of the Hornets scored in double digits. Lerwick scored 21 points. He also had six steals, brought down six rebounds and assisted on four other scores. Reed Thompson had 16 points of his own with four rebounds and three steals. He also dished out four assists. Colin Jessen sunk 14 points and had four steals. Dalton Schaefer added another 12 points.

The Hornets came out strong in the first quarter putting up 23 points allowing the Longhorns only 9. The Hornets kept the pressure on as they scored another 23 points in the second quarter. The Longhorns were able to add 15 points in the second quarter but still fell short in the half trailing the Hornets 46-24.

The second half was still all Hornets as they put up 28 points in the second half while holding the Longhorns to only eight. The Hornets went on a 7-0 run and late in the fourth went on a 12-0 run. Reed Thompson was aggressive under the hoop tipping in a Lerwick shot.

The Hornets are still sitting in the number one seat in the Division and will be starting the playoffs soon.
