Is it a tractor or a robot? On April 22, 2022 at the Burns High School there was a DOT autonomous spreader on the football field.

The DOT autonomous robotic spreader is run by a designated tablet. There is only two in the United States. Frenchman Valley Coop are the ones that are working with the machine. This machine is used to spread fertilizer with the possibility of two products at the same time. DOT can do 16 sections which is 100 to 125 acres per hour. This will help with production and to be more effective. Dot can reduce overlap, decrease nutrient waste and optimize the placement of nutrients. This also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and creates efficiency such as 20 percent savings on fuel, labor, and equipment use. The tablet is a Windows Surface Pro.

At Burns High School the High School and Junior High agriculture class was out on the field to watch and ask questions. Ben Saunder, Vice President of Agronomy at Frenchman Valley Coop explained how DOT works. First Lindsey Cueva explained that they took soil samples to see what they need to put on the football field. Then both Saunder and Cueva went through nutrients that will be used on the football field. Cueva said that they had to map out the field so DOT knows where to go. Brian Knotz then explained how he works the tablet. Frenchman Valley Coop trained two people to work the machine. The students took turns asking questions about DOT. At the end of question and answer time Christphor Ornelas pushed the button to get DOT moving, then DOT proceeded to spread the product across the field.

This project started at a Christmas dinner one night. Someone made the statement that the football field looked bad this year. Sauder said that he had this new DOT autonomous spreader coming to the company and they could possibly help out.

Burns High School will know next year how this will work out. DOT will need to put another application on next year to be more efficient.
