The Pine Bluffs 6th grade D.A.R.E. class celebrated last Friday with a pizza and bowling party at the Pine Bowl, sponsored by the Pine Bluffs Police Department and Laramie County Sheriff's Department.

"D.A.R.E. is a ten-week program on drug and alcohol resistance, education and we cover bullying, peer pressure, basically how to make good decisions," said Laramie County Sheriffs Deputy Char Madden. "We teach the kids how to use the D.A.R.E. decision-making model when situations arise, they have to define the problem, access the situation and come up with choices on what to do, make a choice and then evaluate their choice."

Jason Mickelson carefully eyes the bowling pins before he throws the ball down the lane.

Students also wrote D.A.R.E. essays about making smart choices.

Once the 10 weeks were up, the kids were taken on a tour of the Laramie County Juvenile Detention Center in Cheyenne.

"We give them a tour of the facility and kind of reiterate if they make bad choices, this is where you are going to end up. Sgt. Stewart does the tour and he runs that facility. He keeps it real with the kids and he tells them how it is. By taking the tour, those 10 weeks of learning come together."

After the tour was complete, the kids got together at the Pine Bowl for pizza and bowling. Madden said the party is sponsored by the Pine Bluffs Police Department which has a fund for the D.A.R.E. program.

Participating D.A.R.E. students will be presented certificates at the third quarter award ceremony at Pine Bluffs Elementary.
