Pine Bluffs Arbor Day Event
May 10, 2018
Join the Pine Bluffs Elementary 1st Grade Class in Pine Bluffs City Park on Thursday, May 10 at 2:45 p.m. for a tree planting to celebrate Arbor Day!
In 1872 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in our neighboring state of Nebraska.
Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world. Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling cost, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products.
Trees in our town increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas and beautify our community. Wherever trees are planted they are a source of joy.
The Town of Pine Bluffs is in the process of becoming a Tree City USA. The Tree City USA program has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976, a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees.
More than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA. They have achieved Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry, management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.
Please join us for our first Arbor Day Celebration and the planting of a tree by the Pine Bluffs Elementary 1st Grade Class in City Park on Thursday, May 10 at 2:45 p.m.
