Burns Broncs take down Newcastle Dogies 58-43

February 17, 2022

The Burns Broncs Boys varsity basketball team did battle with the Newcastle Dogies last Friday. The now 9-10 Broncs seemed to be on a roll and wanted to continue to put their opponents down. The Dogies now 6-10 did not slow the rolling Broncs down as they fell to the Broncs 58-43 in a close game.

The game was close except for the second quarter. The first quarter showed the teams only two points apart as the Dogies out scored the Broncs 12-10. But the second quarter the Broncs put it all together and put up 20 points. The defense also gelled and held the Dogies to only four points. This allowed the Broncs to start the second half with a 30-16 lead.

The Broncs came out shooting and hit 14 points in the third but the determined Dogies were not done and outscored the Broncs by one with a 15-14 quarter in favor of the Dogies. However this was as close as they would get as the Broncs put up another 14 points in the fourth and held the Dogies to 11. The Broncs took the game 58-43.

Jackson Kirkbride led the Broncs with 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Caden David added 12 points and eight rebounds while Spencer Smith tallied 12 points. Isaac Bloom added four points on the night while Luke Lerwick and Cooper Lakin each added another three points. Kody Foley rounded out the scoring with another two points.

“We finally had a good shooting night. We know we are capable of shooting like this all the time, but we had struggled lately, so we are happy to see them fall tonight,” Burns coach Kurtis Suloff said. “Our defense was much improved and we did a good job rebounding.”
