Douglas "Doug" Ray Uhrig was born in Hettinger, North Dakota to Elton and Agnes Uhrig in the cold of winter - February 1953.

He grew up in Lead, South Dakota. He was active in sports in high school and was one of the captains of the Diggers at Lead High School Uhrig graduated in 1971. Having come from a strong family history of military service; a Great-Grandpa in the Civil War and a Grandpa in WWI.
